Dear Mr. Penney:
Project BODX-03-141C
Re: Excavation Observations and Compaction Testing, Froposed House, Lot 14, Block 1-Majestic
Oalcs 2"d Addition, 4536 Majestic Oaks Place, Eagan, Minnesota
As you authorized, we have completed the excavation observations and compacCion testing at the
above-referenced lot. The purpose of the excavation observations was to aid in evaluating the
suitability of the soils encountered in the bottom of the excavation for fill and house support. The
purpose of the compaction testing was to aid in evaluating the suitability of the engineered fill placed
for house support.
Available Information
No soil borings were performed for the proposed house. Previous grading had been performed on this lot.
At the time of our observations, there was no available information regarding the previous grading.
At the time of our observations, we were provided with a Certificate of Survey prepared by Mr. A11an
Hastings - Surveyor, dated March 15, 2003. House offset stakes were set in the field by Friedges
Excavating, Ina (Friedges). Braun Intertec excavation oversizing measnrements, bottom of excavation
elevations and compaction test loeations and elevations were referenced to these stakes. The exact house
pad location is the responsibility of others.
Proposed Construction
The proposed house will be a two-story, full basement walkout type with an attached triple garage. Finish
basement floor will be at elevation 913.6 feet and the garage floor will be at 920.0 feet. We assume the
house will be supported by conventional spread footings designed for an allowable soil bearing pressure
not exceeding 2,000 pounds per square foot (ps fl.
Excavatiou Observations
The excavation observations were conducted by a senior engineering assistant on June 12 and 13, 2003.
The excavation observations consisted of observing the soils exposed in the bottom and sidewalls of the
excavation. The approximate density or consistency of the soils encountered was estimated by judging
the force required to advance random, shallow (about 1 to 3 feet deep) hand auger probes. Soil
classifications were determined in the field by examining the hand auger probe cuttings in general
accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) procedures.

Friedges Excavating, Inc.
Project BODX-03-141C
June 17, 2003
Page 2
When we arrived on site, the excavating contractor (Friedges) had removed approximately 7 to 13 feet of
unsuitable soils from below the house pad and oversizing areas. 'The bottom of the excavation ranged
from approximate elevation 903 at the rear of the house (east) to 913 at the northwest corner of the house
(front). At the lower elevations, the soils encountered in the bottom of the excavation primarily consisted
of lean clay that was judged to be in a rather stiff to stiff condition. At the higher elevations, the soils
consisted mainly of inedium dense silty sand to clayey sand. Groundwater was observed at the bottom of
the excavation at about elevation 905. Based on the construction staking provided by Friedges, the
excavation was oversized about 8 to 10 feet beyond the wall lines. See the attached sketch which shows
the proposed house location, excavation limits and bottom of excavation elevations.
Fill and Compaction Tests
The soils used as engineered fiil for house support consisted of either an imported sand or on-site silty
sand. About 3 feet of imported sand (SP-SM) was placed at the bottom of the excavation where
groundwater was encountered. The on-site silty sand was then placed to establish gade. The engineered
fill was placed in about 1-foot lifts w-ith a skid loader, then compacted with a self-propelled, vibratory,
sheepsfoot roller.
A total of 8 eompaction tests were performed in the engineered fill placed for house support. All of the
compaction tests met or exceeded the minimum density requirement of 95 percent of standard Proctor
maacimum dry density (ASTM D 698). Compaction tests were taken at about 2-foot intervals up to footing
subgrade elevation of about 917 in the garage area. The compaction tests and Proctor curves are attached to
this report.
Conclusions
Based on the results of our excavation observations and hand auger probes, it is our opinion the soils
encountered at the excavation bottom in the area of the soil correction at the north/northeast portion of the
house pad are suitable for fill and house suppart.
Based on the constr-uction stalang provided by others, it appears the excavation was adequately oversized
for lateral support of the fill and proposed house.
Based on our compaction test results, it appears the engineered fill tested (to about elevation 917) was
adequately compacted for house support.
General Remarks
It should be noted that standard penetration test borings with power equipment were not taken to evaluate
the soils at depth. However, the soils which were visible and the results of the hand auger probes indicate
that the risk of detrimental settlement due to poor soils at depth is very small and we, thus, recommend that
it be assumed by the owner. The cost for taking soil borings to better define that risk does not appear
warranted.
Services performed by the geotechnical engineers for this project have been conducted with that level of
care and slcill ordinarily exercised by members of the profession currently practicing in this area. No
warranty, expressed or implied, is made.
