The purpose of the excavation observations was to aid in evaluating that the previous placed fill was removed from the footprint of the house and its oversi2ing, and to evaluate the natural soils at the excavation bottom for house and fill support. Also, during our observations we tried to determine the lateral extenL oi the backfilling for the deep utility trench placed at the rear of the house. The purpose of the compaction testing was to aid in determining the density achieved in the fill subsequently placed for house support. BACRGROIIND Excavating and backfilling of this lot was completed during the mass grading in the summer of 1987. Braun's observation and compaction test records indicate we observed the lot on June 9, 1987, and tested the fill on June 11, 1987. A soil investigation of this lot was performed in August, 1989, due to problems that occurred to the house to the west. Braun's soil report dated September 27, 1989, indicated loose to very loose silty sand fill was encountered below the upper 5 feet of the proposed house pad. In this report we recommended all the existinq fill below the house pad and its oversizing be removed down to natural soils. For more information why we recottunended the existing fill be removed, we refer you to our report dated September 27, 1989. EXCAVATION OB3£RVATIONS Excavation observations on this lot were performed by an enqineering assistant from April 23 through May 1, 1990. The existing fill was removed from Lot 37, Block 7, exposing naturally deposited silty sand. The fill was removed in 12 to 15- foot strips starting at the rear of the lot. Durinq our observations, undisturbed natural soils were encountered at elevations ranging from 847 to 864 feet. The natural soil generally consisted of fine to medium grained silty sand. Based on the turning resistance of the hand auger probe, the soil is estimated to be in a medium dense condition. The excavation extended to the east and west lot lines, which allowed for approximately 15 to 20 feet of oversizing along the east and west proposed house lines. The north and south excavation limits extended to the proposed front house line on the north side and approximately 23 feet south of the proposed south house line, which allowed for a minimum of 20 feet of oversizing. Adjacent to the existing sanitary sewer, the existing fill was removed to elevation 843± feet, which is within 8 feet or the sanitary sewer invert elevation. After the existing fill was removed, the natural soil slope was benched prior to replacing the excavated fill. COMPACTION TESTING The fill which was removed from Lot 37, Block 7 during the excavation was reused during the backfilling of this lot. The fill soils generally consisted of silty sand. A total of 16 compaction tests (#1 through #16) were performed from April 23 through May 4, 1990. The compaction tests met or exceeded the recommended density of 95% of standard Proctor. The compaction test results are attached to this report. The natural silty sand soils encountered at the excavation bottom were judged suitable for house and fill support. Based on the compaction test results, it is our opinion that the fill placed was suitable for house support. Based on our observation of the excavation and the soil borings previously completed, it is our opinion that the backfill for the utility placed at the rear of the lot encroached into the house area and its oversizing. The attached sketches indicate our best interpretation on how the backfill of this uti2ity trench extendzd below the house pad. LOt 37, B10Ck 7 Hills of Stonebridge Eagan, Minnesota Dear Mr. Helmer: In response to the settlement problem at the house at 4115 Haven Hill Circle, which is adjacent to this site, BRAUN has completed three soil borings on this lot. The purpose of the soil investigation is to evaluate the on-site soils for house support. BACRGROIIND and tested the fill on June 11, 1987. Excavating and backfilling of this lot was completed in the summer of 1987. BRAUN's observation and compaction test records indicate that we observed the lot on June 9, 1987, The information from our excavation observation indicates that 1 to 1 1/2 feet of topsoil was stripped from the house pad area. The excavation bottom consisted of silty sand, silty clay sand, and silty clay with sand. These soils were judged to be in a medium dense condition. The topsoil stripping extended approximately 160 feet from the center of Haven Hill Circle cul-de-sac. After the topsoil was stripped the excavation bottom was benched to better tie the fill into the existing slope. Fill was required in the southern half of the prepared house pad. ?(I L/ 86-772B United Mortgage - 2- September 27, 1989 Our records indicate 5 to 10 feet of fill was placed at the rear of the house pad. Compaction tests taken in the fill placed in the back of this lot and the adjacent lot indicated the fill was compacted to a minimum density of 90& of modified Proctor. Sanitary and storm sewers were then placed in the utility easements on the above referenced lot. The sewers were placed in either September or November, 1987. The sanitary sewer crossed the southern portion of the lot with an invert elevation near 835. The storm sewer was placed along the west property line. The invert of the storm sewer ranged from elevation 844 to 850 adjacent to the house pad. SOIL SORINGS Soil borings were taken at locations shown on the attached sketch. The surface elevation of the horings were referenced to the basement floor slab of the house at 4115 Haven Aill Circle. The basement slab of this house is near elevation 869.5 +. Three standard penetration test borings (B-1 through B-3) were completed in the proposed house pad area. The three borings encountered fill ranging from 9 to 17 feet in depth. The fill primarily consisted of silty sand with some clayey sand. Penetration resistances indicated the upper 5 feet of the fill was in a medium dense condition. The fill below the upper 5 feet was in a loose to very loose condition. Below the fill the borings encountered silty sand or clayey sand glacial till and poorly graded sand glacial outwash. Penetration resistances indicated the natural soils to be in a medium dense to dense condition. No groundwater was encountered in any of the borings with the hollow-stem auqer in the ground. Immediately after the auger was withdrawn, cave-ins occurred ranging from 15 to 20 feet in depth. The borings were then backfilled. Based on these boring probes it appears that groundwater is below the termination depth of the borings. ANALYSIS Based on the soil boring results, it is our engineering opinion that the existing fill is not directly suitable for house support. It is our opinion that the loose fill at depth could consolidate from the proposed house load or saturation of the fill soils after a house is constructed. BRAunTM 86-772B United Mortgage - 3- September 27, 1989 Based on the surface contours of the site prior to mass grading, we would anticipate only 5 to 10 feet of fill would be in place below the south end of the house pad after topsoil is stripped. However, the borings encountered 14 to 17 feet of fill at the rear of the approximate house pad. This would indicate that additional excavating was completed at the rear of the house pad location after mass grading was completed. The only other construction near the house pads, to our knowledge, was the utility construction. Attached are cross-sections of the proposed house pad showing original grades, final grades, and possible excavation side slopes for sanitary sewer construction. The city engineers (BRA) recalled that the excavation was completed with a trench box 12 feet high. Thus, it is believed that the excavation did not encroach on the house pads. However, the borings taken at the rear of this house pad and the borings taken near the southeast corner of the house at 4115 Haven Hill Circle, all indicate 14 to 17 feet of loose fill. This uniform depth of fill would not be expected based on the original site contours and the completed mass grading. Since the borings at 4115 Haven Iiill Circle and borings B-1 and B-2 were within 25 to 35 feet of the sewer, the uniform depth of the fill appears to indicate some encroachment of the sewer trench into the house pads. RECOMMENDATIONS Because of the potential risk of settlement occurring to a house constructed at the proposed pad location, we recommend that the soils in this house pad be corrected prior to house construction. This would entail removing all existing fill from below the house and extending out beyond the rear of the house a minimum of 15 feet. Based on the soil boring results we anticipate 14 to 17 feet of soil correction will be required at the rear house line. It is our opinion that the existing fill could be reused. The fill should be placed in thin lifts not exceeding 1 foot and uniformly compacted with a large self-propelled vibratory compactor. All fill should be uniformly compacted in thin lifts to a minimum density of 90$ of modified Proctor. Standard penetretion test borings are designated by the prefix "ST" (Split Tube). Power auger borings were advanced by 4" or 6" diameter, continuous-tlite, solid stem augers. Soil classification and strain depths are inferred from disturbed samples augered to the surface and are therefore somewhat approximate. Power auger borings are designated by Ihe prefix "B". Hand probings were advanced manually with a 7v" diameter probe and are limited to the depth from which the probe can he manually withdrawn. Hand probings are indicated by the prefix ,.H.. SAMPLING - All samples are taken with the standard 2" O.D. split tube sampler, except where noted. TW intlicates thin-wall (undisturbed) sample. Dear Mr. Helmer: EXCAVATION OBSERVATION AND COMPACTION TESTING Lot 37, Block 7 Hills of Stonebridge Eagan, Minnesota As you requested, we have provided excavation observations and compaction testing for Lot 37, Block 7 in the Hills of Stonebridge subdivision. The purpose of the excavation observations was to aid in evaluating that the previous placed fill was removed from the footprint of the house and its oversizing, and to evaluate the natural soils at the excavation bottom for house and fill support. Also, during our observations we tried to determine the lateral extent of the backfilling for the deep utility trench placed at the rear of the house. The purpose of the compaction testing was to aid in determining the density achieved in the fill subsequently placed for house support. Excavating and backfilling of this lot was completed during the mass grading in the summer of 1987. Braun's observation and compaction test records indicate we observed the lot on June 9, 1987, and tested the fill on June 11, 1987. A soil investigation of this lot was performed in August, 1989, due to problems that occurred to the house to the west. Braun's soil report dated September 27, 1989, indicated loose to very loose silty sand fill was encountered below the upper 5 feet of the proposed house pad. In this report we recommended all the existing fill below the house pad and its oversizing be removed down to natural soils. The existing 86-772B United Mortgage - 2- September 4, 1990 fill could then be reused and recompacted. For more information why we recommended the existing fill be removed, we refer you to our report dated September 27, 1989. ERCAVATION OBSERVATIONS Excavation observations on this lot were performed by an engineering assistant from April 23 through May 1, 1990. The existing fill was removed from Lot 37, Block 7, exposing naturally deposited silty sand. The fill was removed in 12 to 15- foot strips starting at the rear of the lot. During our observations, undisturbed natural soils were encountered at elevations ranging from 847 to 864 feet. The natural soil generally consisted of fine to medium grained silty sand. Based on the turning resistance of the hand auger probe, the soil is estimated to be in a medium dense condition. The excavation extended to the east and west lot lines, which allowed for approximately 15 to 20 feet of oversizing along the east and west proposed house lines. The north and south excavation limits extended to the proposed front house line on the north side and approximately 23 Peet south of the proposed south house line, which allowed for a minimum of 20 feet of oversizinq. Adjacent to the existing sanitary sewer, the existing fill was removed to elevation 843± feet, which is within 8 feet af the sanitary sewer invert elevation. After the existing fill was removed, the natural soil slope was benched prior to replacing the excavated fill. COMPACTION TESTING The fill which was removed from Lot 37, Block 7 during the excavation was reused during the backfillinq of this lot. The fill soils generally consisted of silty sand. A total of 16 compaction tests (#1 through #16) were performed from April 23 through May 4, 1990. The compaction tests met or exceeded the recommended density of 95$ of standard Proctor. The compaction test results are attached to this report. BRAun" 86-772B United Mortgage - 3- September 4, 1990 CONCLIISIONS Based on our excavation observations, it appears the existing fill was removed from the house pad area and its oversizinq. The natural silty sand soils encountered at the excavation bottom were judged suitable for house and fill support. Based on the compaction test results, it is our opinion that the fill placed was suitable for house support. Based on our observation of the excavation and the soil borings previously completed, it is our opinion that the backfill for the utility placed at the rear of the lot encroached into the house area and its oversizing. The attached sketches indicate our best interpretation on how the backfill of this utility trench extended below the house pad.
