As tequested I have reviewed the proposed reinforced window lintel. My calculatioas
are based on the infoimation listed below, all of which you will need to verify to ensure
that ttus design is valid.
'fhe existing window is in a load bearing wall that is supporting only roof and ceiling
fianiing, that framing spans approximately 23 feet with 2 foot overhang on each side for
a total of 27 feet. (The existing roof and ceiling framing is to be shored as needed)
The elcisting window is approximately 10 feet wide with a centes support that divides the
lintel into two spans of five feet. The center support is to be removed The existing
linkel is a double 2x10 that is continuous over the center support and is essentielly like
new (no major cracks, notches, holes etc.) The liutel supports are on solid wood framing
that will vansfer the jamb loads to the building foundation.
Based on this information you will need to add an L 6 x 3 1/2 x 5/16 angie to the earisting
double 2x 10. The new angle is to be installed with the short leg horizontal and tight to
the bottom of the existing lintel. The new angle is to be fastened to the existing lintel
with 3" long, 5/16" diameter lag bolts every 16", the bolts shouid ba Iocated 3" ironx ibe
bottom of the angle. The ends of t6e angle are to be supported fiill width on a new wall
stud that beazs duectly on the wall sill plate and is fastened to the existing jambs.

Kip, attached is draft of letter regarding lintel. Please review it and let me know if
you have any comments. If it looks like everything is okay let me know and I'll
send you a signed letter which should be alt you need far the building officiai.
Note that a heavier angle, 6" high, Is required. 4" or 3'/:" high angles are too
flexible to share enough of the load with the double 2x10 to be effeetive.
Atthough it isn't required I would recommend several beads of construction
adhesive between the angle and the double 2x10.
