you observed during a recent site visit at the above referenced project. There are also a
couple of additional concerns which will be addressed when the contractor and I have an
opportunity to mect on the si#e ihe week aRer next.

It is my understanding that all of these concerns are related to Unit 11, hich is currently
under construction. However, if similar conditions should arise later in the project, they
may also be addressed in the same way:
Item #1: Steel oost bearine on nad footinQ: The contractor has selected a steel post
with an adjustabie screw jack. The sc:rew jack has been positioned at the bottom end of
the post. You have observed that the contractor's installation of the post vazies in two
respects from what I specified in thc structural notes:
a.) Whereas I called for '/z" or so of grout under tlae post bearing plate, the post was
installed without grout.
Evaluxtion: Although grout helps to distribute the load &om the post evenly over the
conerete footing, I can nevertheless approve of this installation in this case.
b.) Whereas I called for an anchor bolt connection between post and footing, the
contractor's method of installation wi11 serve the same pwpose just as well.

pours the floor slaU around the post, the post will be locked in place, and the same
purpose will be accomplished.

Item #2: Steel beams bearina at end walls: T'he contractor has indicated that in two
cases a steel beam bcars only 1% inches on the wall. In one case, the wall is wood stud
constructioa In the other case, it is a concrete wall.
Evaluation: Where a steel beam beazs on a wood waD, the contractor will fur out the
wall with a treated 2x6, nailed continuously to the existing wood post in the wa11. The
2x6 should be installed very snug. This will provide a minimal, but adequate, 3" of
bearing for the steel lxam. Where a steel beam beazs on a concrete wall, the contractor
will add a 4x4 parallam post under the steel beam. If the parallam is not treated, iY must
bear on treated wood in order to isolate it from any concrete. Again, the post should be
installed as snug as possible.

for alerting me to these coneerns, especially Item #5 below.
Please also refer to Memorandum #6, dated Mazch 18, 2005, in which I previously
addressed tlvee ofyour concerns, which I have listed as [tems #I, #2 and #3. I visited the
site on Thursday to make observations reiated to two additional concerns, which are
listed in the following as Items #4 and #5. h is my understanding that all of these

Evaluation_ As a general performance standazd, it is essential that the top of the concrete
foundation wall be effectively braced against possible inward movement t}ut could be
caused by exterior soil pressure. In this case, floor trusses run parallel to the north wa11,
so that some system of blocking must be installed petpendicular to the trusses. Norrmlly,
this blocking would be installed at 24" on center, similaz to the spacing of the tnuses. It
is essentiat that t6e blocking be effective in bracing the top of the concrete wall by
transferring any load from the top of the wall into the plywood diaphragm of the floor.
In fhe present case, the noRh wall is comprised of relatively short lengths interrupted by
jogs in the walk. As noted in the code, such a wall of uregulaz construction is at least
partially self-bracing. However, it is not prudent to ignore the bracing entirely, since a
wall failure wou(d be cosdy to repair.
Recommendation: Please refer to the attached Detai] Sheet D4, where I have provided a
sample bracing solution. I know that the contractor must make room for ductwork, so that
if this solution does not work in every case, the contractor is responsible to provide
alternate bracing of equal or better capacity according to the above performance standard.
