inside a building - under roof. Where necessary [o store gyp-
sum sheathing outside, it shall be s[acked above ground, prop-
erly supported on a level platform and fully protec[ed from
weather exposure.
5.3 Gypsum sheathing shall be neatly s[acked fla[ wilh care
taken [o preven[ sagging or damage lo edges, ends and surfaces.
6. Application of Gypsum Shea[hing
6.1 Exposure Afrer Installation - Gypsum sheathing is a
substrnte [ha[ is not in[ended for long-term exposure. While
local weather eonditions will dic[ate the length of time gypsum
sheathing may be permitted to be exposed, it should perform
satisfactorily if exposed ro the elements for up to one month.
The gypsum shea[hing shall be covered immediately with a
wea[hervresistive barrier if exposure time will be extended or
weather conditions will be severe.

ing shall be cut by scoring and breaking or by sawing, working
from the face paper eide. When scoring, a shxrp Lmife shall be
used to cut through the face paper into the gypsum core. The
gypsum shea[hing is then snapped back away from the wt face.
The back paper shall be permiUed to be broken by snapping the
gypsum sheathing in the reverse direc[ion, or preferably by w[-
[ing the back paper. All w[ edges and ends of gypsum sheath-
ing shall be trimmed [o obtain nea[ fit[ing joints when gypsum
sheathing is installed. Holes for pipes, fix[ures or other small
openings shall be scored on the face and back before removal
of the cut-out with a saw or special tool designed for [his use.
Where gypsum shea[hing meets projecting surfaces, the gyp-
sum shea[hing shall be neafly scribed and w[.
6.3 When a weather-resistive barrier is required, the weath-

shettthing, to the framing, with the upper layer lapped over the
lower layer in accordance with the code.
6.4 Gypsum sheathing shall be propedy flashed at openings
and preferably located so lhxt no joint will align wi[h xn edge
of the openirtg. Joints shall be s[aggered.

smxll openings shall be properly protec[ed by means such as
flashing or caulking.
6.5 Macimum spacing of framing members shall be 24 in.
(610 mm) o.c.
6.6 Control joints shall be instxlled in walls wherever speci-
fied.
6.7 Where sheaz values xre not required, gypsum sheathing 4
ft(1220 mm) wide shall be permitted to be applied pazallel or
perpendicular to framing with vertical joints over framing
members and with gypsum sheathing fitted snugly around all
window and dooe openings.

and all end joints shall be staggered between adjacent wurses.
Gypsum sheathing shall be Fitted snugly azound all window and
door openings.
610 When shear values aze nol reyuired, fasteners shall be
spaced not more than 8 in. (203 mm) o.c. along vertical ends or

the paper or fracturing the core.
6.10.3 Screws shall be driven so Ihat the screw heads are
at or slightly below the gypsum sheathing surFace paper without
breaking the surface paper or stripping the framing member
azound the screw shank.
6.10.4 Staples shall be driven with the crown parallel to
framing members and in such a manner that the crown bears
tightly agains[ the gypsum sheathing but dces no[ w[ into the
face paper.

ProRot'" SHEATHIMG TREATED CORE TYPE X
ProROC'Sheathing Treated
Core is a water-repellent
gypsum sheathing for
application to the outside
of building freming mem-
bers, and serves as the base
for the euterior wall finish.
ProRoc' Sheathing Treated
Core Type X provides the
same base as ProROC'"
Sheathing, plus it has a spe-
cially formulated core for
use in fire resistance-rated
designs. Both products con-
sist of a solid set, gypsum
core covered with durable
water-resistant backing and
face paper. ProRoc'"
Sheathing and ProRoc'"
Sheathing Type X are avail-
able in a variety of lengths.
Basic Uses
ProRoc'" Sheathing and
ProRoc" Sheathing Type X
are used as attachments to
the outside of exterior wall
framing as a water-resistant
underlayment for various
siding materials. ProRoc"
Sheathing and ProRoc'"
Sheathing Type X can be
used as a sheathing for
wood-framed residential
construction to provide fire
resistance, weather protec-
tion and to add structural
strength when used under
eMerior finishes. They can
also serve as sheathing for
steel stud commercial
construction and as a
component in curtainwall
and exterior insulation and
finish systems. ProRoc"
Sheathing Type X can be
used in fire-rated exterior
wall assemblies.
Advantages
• Low material and applica-
tian costs.
• Moisture-resistant core
and water-repellent sur-
faces provide a barrier
that resists passage of
wind and water.
• Non-combustible gypsum
core protects framing ele-
ments, even when siding
or finish material is com-
busti6le.
• Can be scored and
snapped to exact size
without cutting or sawing.
• Consistently high quality.
• High edge hardness.
• No wavy edges, warps,
bows or deformities.
Limitations
• ProRoc" Sheathing is not
a finished surface, nor is it
a substrate for the dired
application of stucco,
paint or textures.
• Framing spacing should
not exceed 24" o.c.
• ProRoc'"Sheathing should
not he used as a nailing
base.
• ProRoc" Sheathing appli-
cation to framing 6y
adhesive only is not rec-
ommended.
• Boards should be stacked
flat with care taken to
prevent sagging or dam-
age to edges, ends and
surfaces.
• ProRoc'" Sheathing is not
recommended for appli-
cation to exterior ceilings,
soffits or sills.
• ProRoc" Sheathing should
be spaced not less than
1/4" from abutting
masonryto minimize
wicking.
• Storing outside for up to
one month is acceptable
if rtacked off the ground
and under protective
cover.
Date
Product(s) Specified
• ProRoc' Sheathing and
ProRoc" Sheathing Type X
are designed for use as a
substrate to be covered
by an exterior cladding or
other weather barrier,
and are not intended for
long-term exposure.
Treated Core sheathing
may be left exposed for
up to one month after
application.
Composition and
Materials
ProROC' Sheathing and
ProRoc° Sheathing Type X
are manufactured panels

Recommendations
Installation of ProRoc"
Sheathing and ProRoc"
Sheathing Type X should he
consistent with methods
described in the standards
and references noted.
Fasteners should bear tight-
ly against the face of the
sheathing, but should not
cut into the face paper.
Staples should be driven
with the crown parallel to
the framing. Fasteners
should be no less than 3/8"
from the edges and ends of
the sheathing.
Apply vertically with verti-
cal edges butting overthe
center of framing members.
Fit sheathing snugly around
all openings. Attach
sheathing with nails or
screws spaced not over 4"
o.c. around perimeter and
8" to intermediate studs
(space staples not over 3"
and 6" o.c. respectively).
Horizontally-applied square
edge gypsum sheathing
shall be covered with build-
ing felt or equivalent, or
horizontal joints shall be
sealed.
