March 8, 2010 10135 47th Avenue North • • Plymouth, MN 55442 • Attn: Rick Storlien N C. Re: Haarmann Residence -Structural Analysis CONSULTING 1465 Kings Wood Road ENGINEERS Eagan, MN Project #10237 241 CLEVELAND Mr. Storlien, AVE. S.. SUITE B2 At your request, we have performed a structural analysis of the "main wind force resisting system" ST. PAUL, MN of the proposed addition to the referenced residence. We based our analysis on the following documents and assumptions: 5 5 1 0 5- 1 2 6 0 1. Sheets 1-4 prepared by RDS Architects 2. Conventional spread footings are being installed with an allowable soil bearing capacity of 1,500 PSF 3. New roof and floor framing levels are continuously attached to the existing exterior stud walls/rim conditions Based on our analysis it is our opinion that the proposed addition has the capacity to resist wind loads per the Minnesota State Building Code for the "main wind force resisting system". This is provided that the following assumptions regarding the fastening of the proposed construction to the original structure are correct: 1. New ledger member along the existing framing at the first and second floor levels has the following fasteners at those locations: • Minimum 2-3/8" diameter lag screws at 16" on center (embedded minimum 3" into existing rim condition) • Note- This connection requirement has not been designed to resist live and dead loads for the floor and roof framing, and shall not be considered direction for the actual fasteners to be installed in the field. The fasteners noted here are simply minimum requirements to resist lateral loads associated with the "main wind force resisting system". 2. New stud walls that intersect the existing exterior stud wall and new beams at the first floor framing level that bear at the existing exterior stud wall have strapping that extends into the existing framing that resists a tensile load of 800# at those locations (service load). Better Insulation. Climate Pro - Blow -In -Blanket System Formaldehyde -fres Blow-in Loose -fill Fiber Glass Insulation FORMALDEHYDE -FREE Climate Pro has always been formaldehyde -free, but Johns Manville has revolutionized the building insulation industry by introducing formaldehyde -free fiber glass insulation across our entire line of building insulation products. JM Formaldehyde -free insulation provides the same high-quality thermal and acoustical properties as conventional JM fiber glass — just without the formaldehyde -based binder. Why? Because it's a smart thing to do for our customers and the environment. No formaldehyde means fewer things to worry about. Visit us at www.jm.cam for more information. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION The Blow -In -Blanket System (BIBS i is a patented process for installing JM Climate Pro loose -fill insulation. Climate Pro is blown in behind BIBS netting, either dry or with adhesive, for complete coverage and high R -value efficiency in any size or shape cavity. BIBS provides a custom fit for thermally and acoustically superior insulation in walls, ceilings and floors — without settling. BIBS is supported by extensive testing and installer training to ensure optimal performance. APPLICATIONS Climate Pro BIBS is ideal for all wall cavities and the irregular and nonconforming areas around custom windows, arches, cathedral ceilings and in floors. INSTALLATION Equipment for JM Climate Pro installation is engineered for professional use. Contact your local JM sales representative for an authorized contractor. Note: In colder climate areas, vapor retarders are often placed toward the heated or conditioned side of the wall. This is done to reduce water vapor penetration into the wall from the building interior. Conversely, in predominantly hot, humid climates local practices often call for placing the vapor retarder toward the outside of the wall cavity. Check your local building codes for vapor retarder requirements. RECOMMENDED STORAGE AND TRANSPORT Store insulation indoors. Keep insulation clean and dry at all times. When transporting, cover completely with a waterproof tarpaulin as necessary. SPECIFICATION COMPLIANCE— Climate Pro ASTM C 764, Type I CAN/ULC-S102.2 and ASTM E 84 Flame Spread 25 or less, Smoke Developed 50 or less CENTRAL SYSTEMS LLC CENTRAL INSULATION THE BLOW -IN -BLANKET SPECIALISTS LARRY PLOCHER 9835 HWY 284 • WACONIA, MN 55387 952-442.2982 PERFORMANCE ADVANTAGES: • Formaldehyde -free — will not off -gas formaldehyde in the indoor environment. • Thermal Efficiency — provides effective resistance to heat transfer with the highest R -value per inch achievable in sidewall application. A certified installer can adjust the density to obtain the appropriate level of insulation. And it won't settle or separate, so the insulation retains its thermal efficiency. • Sound Control -reduces transmission of sound through exterior and interior walls and floor/ceiling assemblies. • Fire-resistant and Noncombustible — (see Specification Compliance). • Noncorrosive - does not accelerate corrosion of pipes, wiring, or metal studs. • Durable — it will not rot, mildew or otherwise deteriorate. Unlike cellulose, Climate Pro will not hold moisture and will not suffer permanent loss of R -value. • Fast, Clean Applications — quickly insulates spaces of any size or shape without cutting or fitting, for minimal scrap. • Complete Coverage — highly customized walls and vaulted ceilings get a seamless fit, eliminating gaps in nooks and crannies. Ensures a snug fit around plumbing fixtures, ventilation and electrical systems. We based our analysis on the following documents and assumptions: 1. This is provided that the following assumption, regarding the fastening of the proposed construction to the original structure are correct; 1. New ledger member along the existing framing at the first and second floor levels has the following fasteners at those locations: • Minimum 2-3/8" diameter lag screws at 16" on center dded minimum 3" into existing rim condition) • Note- This connection requirement has not been designed to resist live and dead loads for the floor and roof framing, and shall not be considered direction for the actual fasteners to be installed in the field.
