nortll and northwest sides of the building located at 1485 McCarthy Road in Eagan,
Mr. Joseph Kubes, ow7ier of the property, requested us to perform the following:
1. Observe the soils exposed by the post excavations
2. Provide a written report summarizing our work. !D?
I? NOU Y 9 20 7 CONCLUSIONS
Based upon our shallow hand-auger borings and visual observations, it is our
opinion the postholes have been extended to suitable soils, capable of supporting
the 2,000-psf deck load. The excavations were made into fill materiais placed
during soil corrections for the building foundation.
Some of the postholes contained loose or wet fills that collapsed in from the
sidewalls. The contractor was informed to compact the material that was dry and
remove the wet materials from beneath the posts. The City of Eagan Building
Inspector was informed of the site conditions so they could verify the posthole
1604 Riverview Lane excavations were suitable.

REPORT OF: EXCAVATION OB5ERVATION
PROJECT: 1425 McCarthy Road, Eagan, MN DATE: 11-2-07

McGhie and Betts observed removal of unsuitable soils and the placement and compaction of fill
materials during the building soil corrections. The fill materials encountered for the deck support
was similar to the fills noted being placed for the building foundation. A hand auger was pushed
into the bottom of each posthole, and it was determined that the deck piers could support the
proposed 2,000 psf load. As noted, 3 to 4 inches of loose fills that fell in from the sides needed to
be recompacted or removed from the postholes. It was our understanding that the City of Eagan
was going to verify this during their site visit on Nov 2, 2007.
BACKGROUND INFOKMATION
We understand the work being performed at this site is for the construction of a new deck far the
building located at 1485 McCarthy Road. The information provided to us indicated that the
decking would be of wood construction and supported on concrete piers. A maximum deck load
of 2,000 psf was specified.
SUMMARY OF EXCAVATION OBSERVATIONS
On November l, 2007 we oUserved the soils exposed after drilling the piers. We placed a series of
shallow hand-auger borings within the exposed soils to aid in judging the local subsurface soil
conditions. "The soils were visually and manually classified in accordance with the USCS and
estiinates were made of their strength properties.
The soils exposed were primarily fill materials consisting of silty lean clays with sand. The
exposed soils did not appear significantly disturbed and were judged to be suitable for support of
the deck or placement of engineered fill.

INTRODUCTION
c
This report concerns our observation of soil conditions for the ?
proposed construction of a new residential structure located on Lot
2Block 3 of the Oslund-Timberline Addition in Eagan, Minnesota.
Mr. Ray Mi(ler, the property owner and developer, requested us to
perform the following:
1. Observe the soils exposed by the excavations.
2. Perform compaction testing on a will call basis.
3. Provide a written report sununarizing our work
CONCLUSIONS
Based upon our shallow hand-auger borings and visual observation?s, it
is our opinion that the unsuitable soils have been removed from the
foundation support area and that the excavation was extended to the
natural silty clays, sandy silts, and silts with sand.
It is our understanding that the residential building pads are to be
designed for an assumed soil bearing capacity of 2,000 psf, as required
by the City of Eagan building code standards.

Report Of: Excavation Observation
Project: Lot 2Biock 3 of the Oslund-Timberline Addition- Eagan, MN Date: June 9, 2006
PAGE: 2 Client/MBI #: N 1298/N6240
For this assumed soil bearing stress, it is our opinion that the foundation and
slab support system could be placed upon an engineered fill at least 4' in
thickness.
Based upon our shallow hand-auger borings and visual observations, it is our
opinion that the foundations and floor slabs will be placed upon suitable
engineered fill. Where unsuitable soils were encountered, they were
excavated and replaced with engineered fill.
You should be aware that the exposed silty clays, sandy silts, and silts with
sand could easily be disturbed by construction traffic, especially in wet
conditions. Furthermore, with below freezing temperatures, these soils may
freeze if not protected. In either case we recommend any such disturbed or
frozen soils be removed prior to footing or floor slab placement.
It is important to review the fill limits and total depth of fill when placing
structures upon compacted fill and when filling the excavation. The location
of the footings must allow for at least a 1:1 slope from the bottom of the
footing to the outside limits of the engineered fill. It is important to check this
at the time of construction and to assure that during filling unsuitable soils do
not encroach within the 1:1 limits and extending downward and outward from
future footines.
Subsurface exploration was not performed for this project; therefore our
comments are based solely on the soils observed by the excavation. The risk
of unsuitable subsurface conditions and potential settlement below the
excavation depths observed must be understood and assumed by the owner.
This report does not replace a formal geotechnical investigation and report.
Report Of: Excavation Observation
Project Lot 2113lock 3 of the Oslund-Timberline Addition- Eagan, MN Date: June 9, 2006
PAGE: 3 Client/MBI #: N1298/N6240
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
During our field visits we were informed by Ray Miller that the proposed
construction at this site will be a two-story residential structure with a full
basement, wood framed walls and a wood truss roof system. The building
will be supported upon shallow spread footings to frost depth. The City of
Eagan requires that residential buildings have a minimal soil bearing capacity
of 2,000 psf.
The City of Eagan also requires that any new fill needed to raise the area to
final grade be compacted to at least 95% of ASTM D 1557, the Modified
Proctor.
It is our opinion that the foundation will be placed upon an engineered fill of
at least 4' in thickness on top of the native soils.
SUMMARY UF EXCAVATION OBSERVATIONS
Between the dates of May 22, 2006 and May 25, 2006 we observed soils
exposed after stripping of the unsuitable soils. We placed a series of shallow
hand-auger borings within the exposed soils to aid in judging the local
subsurface soil conditions. The soils were visually and manually classified in
accordance with the USCS and estimates were made of their strength
properties.
Our hand-auger borings and observations indicated the exposed soils were
mostly siity clays, sandy silts, and silts with sand. The exposed soils did not
appear significantly disturbed and were judged to be suitable for engineered
fill placement, and foundation support.

DENSITY TESTING
It was recommended by the City of Eagan that any fills placed beneath the
foundations or floor slab be compacted to a minimum of 95% of the Modified
Proctor (ASTM D1557). Copies of test reports will be sent to the City of
Eagan under separate cover.
REMARKS
Work completed by us at this site has been performed in accordance with
normal engineering standards in effect at this time and place. Other than this,
no warranty is implied as to the grading work.
Our observations and conclusions are based upon the plans and specifications
that existed at the time the fieldwork was completed. Any changes in the
plans or specifications may result in this report being void. McGhie & Betts
must be made aware of any revisions or additional plans and specifications in
order to determine the validity of this report.

Dear Mr. Miller:
As per your request I have reviewed your plans and analyzed the fooUngs and foundation walls an? opening in the rear wall at
the garage area. I have assumed that the soil is sandy clay (Group II). ?
The foilowing is required:
• Footing, front and rear walls: 24" wide by 10" deep, minimum with 2- #4 rebar.
• Footing, side walls: 16" wide by 10" deep (or 20" x 8"), minimum with 2- #4 rebar.
• Foundation: 8" (minimum) cast in place concrete wall with #6 rebar at 36" o.c vertically (or # 4 rebar at 18"o.c. vertically)
and 444 rebar horizontally. Concrete in the wall must be 3,000 PSI minimum.
• tiintel_oyer 9' •0"opCI11Dg: W 8-x 21-Grade"50 wifh standard bearing pratesandfiattom-p11?e. ?
• Precasf plank is designed by supplier and adequate to cam the loads. Piank will be doweled in[o the top of the walls.
The information and opinions contained herein are based upon the limited investigation described at the beginning of this report. No
