The chimney appears to be about 40 inches across and has been flashed this way since its construction in the 60's(?) To keep the cost of chimney work down, we simply replaced the pan metal, not the counterflashing, installing up the roof 16". I custom bent the metal myself so I know how far up it goes past the shingles. I appreciate the chimney flashing codes and the need for them, yet was hoping this would pass the test as the original has lasted for all these years without incident.
