CONSULTING ENGINEERSJSOILS AND MATERIALS Test Borings • Foundation Engineering and Recommendalions • Inspec[ion ot Constmetion • Material Testing of Soils, Concrete 66-29A Windsor Development Corporation -2- 5/14/76 Current design plans indicate that a two-story full basement dwelling is proposed for this lot. Proposed top of block grade is elevation 907 with the garage footings at approximate elevation 903.5 and the basement footings at approximate elevation 898.5. The inspection for the excavation of this house was conducted on May 13, 1976. At that time, the excavation was at proposed house and garage footing grade of elevation 903.5} from the northwest house corner to approximately the southeast house corner. The basement area was excavated down to approximate elevation 897 to 898h throughout the proposed basement area. Surface grades were detexmined wiYh a hand level and referenced to the of£set grade stake set at elevation 905 by Suburban Engineering. A visual inspection of tRe soils exposed in the sides of the hasement excavation 3ndicated approximately four to six feet of clayey sand fi11 underlain by clayey silt alluvial soils. Four hand auger probes were taken throughout the basement flobr area. These probes encountered clayey- silt alluvial soils from the surface to their termination depth of approximately four feet. Proving ring penetrometer probes were also taken adjacent to the hand auger prdbes to assisb in evaluating the suitability o£ these natural soils. The proving ring penetrometex probes indicate that these soils are of a medium to rather stif£ consistency with a maximum allowable bearing capacity on the omder o£ 1500 to 2000 ppunds per square foot. Hand auger prpbes taken in the garage footing trenches indicated at least three £eet of compacted clayey sand fill immediately beneath the proposed garage footings. Two methods are available to provide a suztable soils foundation for the basement footings. One method would be to subcut the proposed footing axeas a minimum of twp £eet and replace this subcut with compacted fr11 so31s. The subcut should be oversized at a minimum of a 1:1 sideslope down and away.from the bottom outside edge af the footings. The £ootings could then be of minimum width with a maximum soil bearing pressure of 2000 pounds.per square foot. A second method of providing a suitable foundation scheme would be to place the footings directly upon undisturbed silt soils. The footing loads would have to be reduced until a maximum soil bearing pressure of 1500 pounds per square foot is obtained. If this. method is desired we would recommend that continuous steel reinforcement be placed in all footings to assist in bridging any isolated soft areas and to reduce the chances of detrimental differential settlement. Caution must be exercised if the silt soils are left in place and the footings placed directly upon them. Silt soils characteristically loose theix stability and load carrying capacity when subjected to either moisture or disturbance such as those caused by heavy construction equipment. It is therefore recommended that the last four 66-29A Windso; Development Corporation -3- 5/14/76 to six inches of excavation be completed by hand to further minimize disturbarice of the natural soils. Tf water is encountered in the excavation, all saturated soils must he completely removed from beneath all footing and floor areas. It would be recommended to p'lace a six inch sand or gravel working base throughout the bottom of the excavation to minimize disturbance of the natural silt soils. Settlement calculations under the assumed grades and footing elevations indicate that less than one-half inch of differential settlement is anticipated if the basement footings.are placed directly upon undisturbed silt aliuvium. If-the basement footings are subcut and placed on a ninimum of two icet of conrpac:ted iill xe aaticir,aie dif£erertial settlenent of less than one-quarter inch. Some settlement wi11 be caused due to placement of backfill around the wa11s to proposed grade=. Based on the grades determined from the existing bench.mark approximately 12 inches of fill is required along the north and east building lines. Settlement due to this fill is on the order of one-c[uarter inch. We would an.ticipate that all settlement due to the backfill loads would be complete within onemonth a#ter placement. It is recommended that backfilling be completed as soon as possible to eliminate this added differential settlement prior to construction of the main super structure.
