On October 23, 1990, a petroleum tank release was reported to the MPCA. Since then, the following corrective actions have been taken in response to the release: - One 10,000 gallon underground storage tank previously containing diesel fuel was removed. - Approximately 10 cubic yards of petroleum contaminated soils were excavated and used as controlled fill at an excavation on Collins Drive in Eagan with MPCA approval. - Soil excavation extended down to 9 feet below grade. Field soil vapor headspace analysis utilizing a photoioniza[ion detector indicated levels oE 0.1 to 0.7 parts per million (ppm) at the base of the excavation. Chemical analyses of two soil samples taken from the north and south ends of the excavation basin detected 21 and 2.4 ppm, respectively, for total hydrocarbons as fuel oil. Analysis for benzene, ethyl benzene, toluene, xylene compounds indicated levels of less than 0.3 ppm. It was confirmed that the standing water observed in the excavation basin was not ground water. Based on the available data, the low levels of petroleum contaminated soil that remain in isolated areas of the site do not pose a threat to pu6lic health or the environment.
