This repoR provides a summary of our construction testing services. Availabte InFormation We were provided with a utility plan, a grading and a paving plan prepazed by Westwood Professional Services, Inc., dated January 29, 1998. We understand the building will be a one-story, slab-on-grade strucrure supported by typical spread footings designed for a soil beazing pressure of up to 3,000 pounds per square foot (psf). Structural plans for the building were available on-site at the time of our inspections. Eaccavation Observations Excavation observations were conducted from Mazch 2 through 13, 1998, by a senior engineerin; assistant. The excavation observations consisted of observing the soils exposed in the bottom and side wails of the footing and column pad excavations. The approximate consistency or density of the soils encountered was estimated by judging the force required to advance random, shallow (about 3 feet deep) hand auger probes. Soii classifications were determined in accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTW procedures by examining the hand auger probe cuttings. The soils encountered generally consisted of naturally deposited silty sands which were judged to be in a medium dense condition. The natural soils encountered were judged to be suitable for footing support. C.B. Commercial Project BODX-98-029C June 17, 1998 Page 2 Compaction Testing Compaction tests 1 through 9 were performed on the backfill placed to establish interior floor slab subgrade. These tests met or exceeded the minimum density requirements of 95 percent of standard Proctor density. Compaction tests 501 through 507 were performed on the backfill placed to establish exterior pavement subecade above utilities. These tests met or exceeded the minimum density requirements of 95 percent of standazd Proctor density to within 3 feet of fmished grade and 100 percent of standard Proctor density in the upper 3 feet in pavement azeas. The compaction test reports and Proctor aze attached to this report. Structural Steei Nondestructive Examinations Services Suvctural steel nondestructive examinations services were performed on this project as authorized. These services were conducted on May 1, 1998, on an on-call basis. The observations were performed by Mr. Joel Alsum, a level II technician qualified as an Internatiooal Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) certified special inspector for strux:tural steel and welding. ' Visual weld examinations were conducted in accordance with American Welding 5ociety (AWS) D1.1-1994, Sections 3.6 and 8.15 requirements. The observations found the welding to be generally acceptable. Exceptions were the column to struts fillet welds at grids 2 and 3, B to D which were not welded at the time of our inspection, and the welds found along grid A and grid E where the weld pattern for the deck is 12 inches on center instead of the pattem shown on detail 4/E1. Bolting observations were conducted randomly and appeared acceptable. ProofroIl O bs ervati ons Prior to pavin;, the subgrade was proofrolled with a loaded tandem axle truck. Based on the proofroll, the sub;rade was jud;ed ro be suitable for pavement support. Summary Basetl on the results of our excavation observations and hand auger probes, it is our opinion the natural soils encountered aze suitable for foundation support. Based on the results of our compaction tests, it appeazs the fill soils placed met the project requiremenu and are judged to suitable for floor slab support. Based on the resulu of our utility trench backfill compaction tests and proofroll observation, it appears the subgrade is adequate for pavement support. C.B. Commercial Project BODX-98-029C June 17, 1998 Page 3 Based on the results of our structural steel nondestructive examination services, it appears the welding and bolting completed at the time of our site visit met the project requirements. The exceptions to this aze the column to struts 511et welds at grids 2 and 3, B to D which were not welded at the time. Also the weid pattern for the deck at grid A and E is 12 inches on center instead of the pattern shown in detail 4/El. General Remarks It should be noted that standazd penetration test borings with power equipment were not taken to evaluate the soils at depth. However, the soils which were visible and the results of the hand auger probes indicate that the risk of detrimental settlement due to poor soils at depth is very small and we, thus, recommend that it be assumed by the owner. The cost for taking soil borings to better detine that risk does not appeaz warranted. Services performed by the geotechnical engineers for this project have been conducted with that level of care and skill ordinarily exercised by members of the professiou curready practicing in this area.
