1994 ENERGY CODE CALCULATIONS
SINGLE 8 DUPLEX FAMILY HOMES
The following energy code requirements should be calculated and included with a building
permit application. (This list is not intended to be an exhaustive and comprehensive report, but
is only in#ended to help you in complying with the basic requirements of the energy code. For
further information, please contact the Energy Information Center of the State of Minnesota at
296-5175.)
? Roof - ceiling assemblies - R-38 Ceiling insulation allowed if Advanced or
Improved framing techniques are used.
Qdvanced = ceiling framing that achieves full
insulating value to the outside of exterior walls.
e.g. energy trusses. Improved = min. 7-1/2"
between the wall top plate and roof sheathing.
- R-44 Ceiiing insulation required at rafters or trusses
that are framed without Advanced, or Improved,
framing technique.
U= 0.026 Average over entire ceiling area.
? In ceiiings without attics, insulation must be R-38 between framing Ip it is suggested that
R-5 sheathing be installed on the ceiling side (e.g. 2" x 12" framing at vauits/dormers;
scissors trusses; etc.
? Exterior walls _& rim joists - R-19 Typical wall insulation at 2" x 6' stud framing.

windows, doors, and framing.
? Floors over unheated spaces - R-24 Typical floor insulation between floor joists.

? Foundations (all exterior walls) - Minimum of R-10 insulation from the top of the
foundation wall L the top of the footing.
? All insulated areas must be separated from the heated space by a well-lapped, or sealed,
vapor barrier with a maximum perm rating of 0.1. A 4 mil. poly sheet, or equivalent, meets
this requirement.
? All penetrations, such as but not limited to fire-stops, vent pipes, wall outlets, recessed light
fixtures, etc., should be sealed. ?
? An air-impermeable barrier must be provided where insulation is susceptible to intrusion
(wind-wash) of outdoor air (e.g. at attic knee-walls, exterior wali plate line at rafters,
cantilevered floors, etc.).
? A Kraft face Ft-19 rype insulation will be accepted in the rim joist areas. Air chute baffles
are to be placed in each rafter space.
? See attached tables, as copied from the ASHRAE 1993 Fundamentals Handbook, for 'U'
and 'R' values of the most common building components.

The Community Development Department has received a complaint from a property owner
in the vicinity of the above-referenced address. A site inspection was performed and a trash
receptacle was noted in front of your house near the street.
I was unahle to reach you by phone so I am writing to let you know that the Eagan City
Code allows trash/refuse containers at the curbside only the night before and the actual day
of trash pick up. At all other times, the containers must be stored inside the home or
garage.
