Occupuncies shall have a minimum width of 36 inches. For special requirements
for Groups E and 1 Occupancies, see Sec[ions 3319 and 3321.
(c) Height Cortidors and exterior exit balconies shall have a clear height of not
less than 7 feet measured ro the ]owest projection from the ceiling.
(d) Projections. The required width of wrtidors shall be unobstrucred.
ERCEPTION: HanJrails and doors, when tuily opened, shall not redum the
required width by more Ihan 7 inches. Doors in any position shall not reduce Ihe
required width by more than one halC Other nonstructutal projections such as trim

(e) Access to Exits. When more than one exit is required, they shall be so

(f) Changes in Elevation. When a corridor or exterior exit balcony is accessi-
ble to the hundicapped, changes in elevation of the floor shall be made by means

Occupancy having an occupant load of IO or more and walis of corridors serving

Ceilings of noncombustible construction may be suspended below (he fire-
resistive ceiling.

(h) Openiogs. L Doors. Whea corridor walls are reyuired to be of one-hour
fire-resistive construction by Subsection (g) above, every door opening sha0 be
protected by a tigho-fitting smoke- and draft-control assembly having a fire-
protec[ion ra[ing of not less than 20 minutes when rested in accordance wi[h
U.B.C. Standard No. 43-2 without the hose stceam test. The door and frame shall

bear an approved label or other identification showing the rating thereof, the name
of the manufacmrer end the identification of the service wnducting the inspection
of materials and workmanship at the factory during fabrication and assembly.
Doors shall be maintained self-closing or shall be aulomatic closing by acmation
of a smoke detecror in accordance with Section 4306 (b). Smoke- and drafb
control door assemblies shall be provided with a gasket so installed as to provide a
seal where the door mee[s the stop on both sides and across the top.
EXCEPTIONS: 1. Viewpor[s may be installed if Ihey require a hole not larget
[han 1 inch in diameter ihrough the duur, have a[ least a%a-inch-[hick glass disc and
the holder is of inetal which will not melt out when subjec[ ro temperatures of
1700°F.

2. Openings other than doors. Interiar openings for other than doors or ducts
shall be protected by fixed, approved '/s-inch-thick wired glass ins[alled in steel
frames. The total area of all openings, other than doors, in any portion of an
interior corridor shall not exceed 25 percent of the area of the corridor wall of the

(b) Width. Stairways serving an occupant load of 50 or more shall be not less
{ lhan 44 inches in width. Stairways serving an occupant load of 49 or less shall be
? not less than 36 inches in width. Pdvate stairways serving an occupant load of less
? than 10 shall be not less than 30 inches in width.
Handrails may project into the required width a distance of 36/z inches from
i each side of a stairway. Other nonstructural projections such as trim and similar
! decorative feamres may project into the required width 1'h inches on each side.
(c) Rise and Run. The rise of every step in a stairway shall be not less than 4
inches nor greatec than 7'fz inches. Except as permi[ed in Subsections (d) and (f),
the run shall be not less than 10 inches as measured horizontally between the
vertical planes of the fur[hermosl projection of adjacent lreads. Ezcept as permi[-
[ed in Subsec[ions (d), (e) and (f), the largest tread run wi[hin any flight of stairs
, shall not exceed the smalles[by more than 3/e inch. The greates[ riser height within
any flight of stairs shall not exceed the smallest by more than ?/a inch.
EXCEPTIONS: I. Private stairways serving an occupant load of less than 10
and stairways to unoccupied roofs may be constructed wi[h an 8-inch maximum rise
and 9-inch minimum run.

2. Where the bottom riser adjoins a sloping public way, walk or driveway having
an established grade and serving ac a landing, a varia[ion in height of the bottom riser
of not more lhan 3 inches in every 3 feet of stairway width is pertnitted.
(d) Winding Stairways. In Group R, Division 3 Occupancies and in private
stairways in Group R, Division I Occupancies, winders may be used if the
required width of run is provided at a point not more than 12 inches from the side
of the stai[way where the tmads are the nanower, but in no case shall any width of
run be less than 6 inches at any point.
(e) Circular Stairways. Circular stairways may be used as an exit, provided
the minimum width of run is not less than 10 inches and the smaller radius is not
kss than twire the width of the stairway. Thc largest tread width or riser height
within any Flight of stairs shall no[ exceed the smallest 6y more than 3/e inch.
(f) Spiral Stairways. In Group R, Division 3 Occupancies and in private
stainvays within individual units of Group R, Division 1 Ocwpancies, spiral
stairways may be installed. Such stairways may be used [or required exits when
the area secved is limited ro 400 square fee[.
The tread must provide a clear walking area measuring at least 26 inches from
the outer edge of the supporting column m the inner edgc of the handrail. A run of
at least 71h inches is to be provided a[ a point 12 inches from where the tread is the
narroweSL The rise must be sufficien[ to provide 6-foot 6-iAch headroom. The
rise shall no[ exceed 91h inches.
(g) Landings. Every landing shall have a dimension measured in the direc[ion
of Vavel equal [o the width of the stairway. Such dimension need not ezceed 4 feet
when the stair has a straight run. A door swinging over a landing shall not reduce
the width of the landing to less than one half its required widlh at any posi[ion in
its swing nor by more than 7 inches when fully open. See Section 3304 (h).
EXCEPTION: Stairs serving an unoccupied roof are exempt from Ihese
provisions.
(h) Basement Stairways. When a basement stairway and a xtairway lo an upper
srory terminate in the same exi[ enclosure, an approved barrier shall be provided
ro preven[ persons from continuing on into the basement. Directional exit signs
shalt 6e provided as specified in Section 3314.
(i) Dis[ance Between Landings. There shall be not more than 12 Feet vertically
between ]andings.
(j) Handrails. Stairways shall haJe handrails on each side, and every slairway
required to be more than 88 inches in width shall be pwvided with no[ less Ihan
one in[ermediate handrail for each 88 inches of required width. In[ermediute
handrails shail be spaced approximately equally across with the entire wid[h of the
stairway.
EXCEPTIONS: l. Staifways 4G inches or less in wid[h and s[airways serving
one individual dwelling unit in Group R, Division 1 or 3 Occupencies may have one
handrail, excepl lhat such slairways open on one or bolh sides shall have handrails
provided on the opcn side or sides.

Handrails projecting from a wall shall have a space of not less (han 11/2 inches
between the wall and the handrail.
(k) Guardrails. See Seclion 1711.
(I) Exterior Stairway Nrotection. All openings in the ex(erior wall below or
within 10 feet, measurcd horizontally, of an cxrerior exit stairwxy scrving a
building over two stories in height shall be protected by a self-cbsing fire
assembly having a thrcc-fourths-hour (ire-protcc(ion rating.

Enclosed usable space under stairs shall have the walls and soffits protected on

(a) Stairway to RooC In every building four or more stories in hcight, one
slairway shall extend to the roof surface, unless the roof has a slope greater Ihan 4
in 12. See Subsection 3306 (m) for roo(hatch reyuirements.
(p) Headroom. Every stairway shall have a headroom clearancc of not less than
6(cet 6 inches. Such clearances shall be measured vertically from a plane parallel
and tangcnt to the stairway tread nosings to the soffit above at all points.

(q) S[airway Numbering System. An approved sign shall be located a[ each
flwr level landing in all enclosed s[airways of buildings four or more stories in
height. The sign shall indica[e the tloor level, the terminus of the top and bottom
of the stairway and the identification of the stairway, The sign shall be located
approximately 5 feet above the floor landing in a position which is readily visible
when [he door is in the open or closed position. Signs shall comply with
requirements of U.B.C. Standazd No. 33-2.
Ramps
Sec, 3307. (a) General. Ramps used as exits shall conform to the provisions of
Ihis sectioa .
(b) Width. The width of ramps shall be as required for stairways.
(c) Sbpe, The slope of ramps required by Table No. 33-A shall be not steeper
Ihan 1 vertical to 12 horizontal. The slope of other ramps shall not be steeper Ihan
1 vertical [0 8 horizontal.
When provided with fixed seating, the main tloor of the assembly room of a
Group A, Division l, Division 2, 2.1 or 3 Occupancy may have a slope not steeper
than i vertfcal to 5 horizonta).
(d) Landings. Ramps having slopes steeper than 1 vertical to 15 horizon[al
shall have landings at Ihe rop and bottom, and at least one intermediate landing
shall be provided for each 5 fee[ of rise. Top landings and intennediate landings
shal] have a dimension measured in the direction of ramp run of not less than 5
feet. Landings at the 6ottom of ramps shall have a dimension in Ihe direction of
ramp run of not less than 6 feet.
Doors in any position shall not reduce [he minimum dimension of the landing to
]ess [han 42 inches and shall not reduce [he required width by more than 3'/2
inches when fully open.
(e) Hapdrails. Ramps having slopes steeper than 1 vertical to IS horizontal
shall have handrails as required for stairways, except that intermediate handrails
shall not be required. Ramped aisles need not have handrails on sides serving
fixed seating.
(f) Construction. Ramps shall be construc[ed as required for stairways.
(g) Surface. The sufface of ramps shall be roughened or shall be of slip-
resistant materials.
Horimntal Exit
Sec. 3308. (a) Used as a Required Exit. A horizontal exit may be ronsidered
as a required exit when confomung to the provisions of this chapter. A horizontal
exit shall mt serve as the only exit from a portion of a building, and when Cwo or
more exits are required, not more than one half of [he total number of exits or total
exit width may be horizontal exi[s.
(b) Openings. All openings in the two-hourfve-resis[ive wall which provides a
horizontal exit shall be protected by a fire assembly having a fire-protection rating
of no[ less than one and one-half hours. Such fire assembly shal] be automatic
closing as provided in Section 4306 (b) upon ac[uation of a smoke de[ector.

(c) Discharge Areas. A horizontal exit shall lead into a floor area having
capacity for an occupant ]oad not less [han Ihe occupant load served by such exit.
The capacity shall be determined by allowing 3 square feet of net clear Floor area
per ambulatory ocwpant and 30 square feet per nonambularory cecupant.
Stairway, Ramp and Escalator.Enclosures ..
Sec. 3309. (a) General. Every interior stairway, ramp or escalator shall be
enclosed as speciFied in Ihis section.
ERCEPTIONS: 1. In other than Group I Occupancies, an enclosure will not be.-
required for a stairway, ramp or escala[or serving oniy one adjacent Floor and w[
connected wi[h corridors or stairways serving other floors. For enclosure of escala- ?
tors serving Group B Ocwpancies, see Chaprer 17.
2. 5[airs in Group R, Division 3 Occupancies and stairs wi[hin individual
apartments in Group R. Division 1 Occupancies need not be enclosed.

(b) Enclosure Construcdon. Enclosure walls shall be of not less than two-
hour fire-resistive cons[ruc[ion in buildings more [han four s[ories in height or of
Types I and II fire-resistive construction and shall be of not less than one-hour Ere-
resistive construction elsewhere.
(c) Openings inlo Enclosures. There shall be no openings inro exit enctosures
except exit doorways and openings in exterior walls. All exi[ doors in an exit
enclosure shall be prorected by a fire assembly having a fire-protection rating of
not less than one hour where one-hour shaft construction is permi« ed and one and
one-half hours where two-hour shaft construction is required. Doors shall be
maintained self-closing or shall be automatic closing by actuation of a smoke
detector as provided for in Section 4306 (b). The maximum transmitted tempera-
Nre end point shall not exceed 450°F. above ambient at the end of 30 minutes of
the Fve exposure specified in U.B.C. Standard No. 43-2.
(d) Extent of Endosure. Stairway and ramp enclosures shall include landings
and parts of floors connecting stairway Flights and shall also include a corridor on
the ground floor leading £rom the stairway ro the exterior of the building.
Enclosed corzidors or passageways are not required from unenclosed s[airways.
Every opening into the conidor shal] comply with the requirements of Section
3309 (c).
EXCEPTION: In office buildings clasud es a Group B, Division 2 Occupancy,
a maximum of 50 perrent of the ezits may discharge through a street-Floor lobby,
