INTRODUCTION
This report contains the resulu of soil observations and testing that we performed at the
referenced site. Our services were done on a part-dme basis. The scope of our work was
limited to the following:
• observing the base of the footing excavation for the proposed residence
• drilling hand auger borings and performing hand cone penetrometer probes in the base
of the footing excavation
• providing a judgment on the suitability of the exposed soils to support the anficipated fill
and building loadings
• conducting a wmpacfion test in previously-placed fill encountered in the fooGng
excavation
• summarizing the resuits of the above in a written report
Our work on this project was verbally authorized by Mr. 7erry Wageman.
2102 University Avc W . St. Paul, MN 55114 • Phone 612-659-9001 • Fux 61Z-659-1379
AET /F91-306 - Page 2
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
To our knowledge, no [est borings have been put down in the azea of the proposed building.
Because of this, we cannot comment on ttie soil conditions at depths. Our judgments reported
herein are based only to those soils which are observable atthe surface and those observed or
probed by our hand auger borings and penetrometer probes. In order to explore condifions
further at depth, deeper test borings would be needed.
DESIGN INFORMATION
We understand or assume that the proposed buiiding: 1) will be one to two stories in height;
2) will have a full basement with the floor level at about elevation 95; 3) will have a wood
foundation with relatively light loads normally associated with residential construction; 4) will
have foundation gravel placed below the wood foundation; 5) will have normal tolerance to
setflement; and 6) will be constructed in accordance with applicable building code requirements.
Deviations from the above design information could necessitate altering our conclusions and
recommendations.
Elevations presented in this report aze in reference to the centerline of Pazkcliff Drive in front
of the lot. A temporary bench mark elevation of 100.0 was used there.
EXCAVATION OBSERVATIONS
We observed the mass excava6on for the proposed building on March 19, 1991. The excavafion
was compieted prior to our arrival. Portions of the foundation gravel was in place. In
conjunction with o6serving the base of the excavation, we conducted shallow hand auger borings
and hand cone penetrometer probes in the base of the excavation.
AET ;791-306 - Page 3
Natural sandy soils were exposed in the base of the garage footing and the majority of the
basement footing excavation. Foundation gravel was already in-place over portions of these
areas. Natural sandy soils were encountered in hand auger borings that we drilled in those
azeas.
Hand cone penetrometer probes conducted in the natural sandy soils indicate the soils have
sufficient strength to support the andcipated foundation loadings.
Fill soils were also encountered in an area within the basement footing excavarion. The azea
was located along the pmposed northern footing line, about midway between the nonheast and
northwest building comers. Hand auger borings encountered about 2' of the fill soils over the
natural sandy soils.
T'he base of the foodng excavation was dry.
The base of the footing excavation was at design elevations of about 99 for the garage foodng
and 94 for the basement fooring.
Stakes representing the location of the proposed footings were staked in the field by others. Our
observations were made in reference to those stakes.
COMPACTION TESTS
On February 6, 1991, we conducted one density (compaction) test in the fill previously placed
to attain proposed basement footing grade. The density test was evaluated against the Moisture
Density Relation of Soils as designated by ASTM:D698-78 (Standard Proctor). The results of
the tests aze attached.
AET #91-306 - Page 4
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMIMENDATIONS
Based on the results of our observations, hand auger borings, hand cone penetrometer probes,
and the available informadon, it is our judgment that the natural sandy soils exposed in the
garage and basement foodng excavation bottom were suirable for support of the anticipated fill
and skructural loadings.
To aid our judgments of the previously placed fill located below the northern basement footing
line, one in-place density test was performed. The results of that test indicate a compacGon level
of 91 %. That level is below the 95 % level we would recommend for proper support. Our hand
auger borings encountered natural sandy soils, suitable for support of the anticipated fill and
structural loadings, below the previously-placed fill.
The results of the testing was discussed with the client on Mazch 19, 1991. We recommended
that the previously-placed fill be recompacted and retested or that the previously-placed fill be
removed down to the natural sandy soils, and replaced with foundation gravel. We understand
that the client chose to remove the previously-placed fill down to the natural sandy soils and
replace it with a thicker layer of foundation gravel.

F/ELD SAMPL/NG AND TEST/NG METHODS
Standard Penetration/Solit-SE)oon Samolina IASTM• D7 5861. A steel split-barrel sampling tube is driven
into the soil with a 140•pound hammer dropped from a height of 30" (the hammer is dropped onta a
rod attached to the sampler). The number of hammer blows required to drive the sampler tube 12"
into the ground (after an initial set of 6') is recorded as the standard penetration resistance (N-value)
of the soil for the sampling interval. Penetration of less than 18" is permitted under ASTM:D1586.
When driving is compiete, the sampier is retrected and opened, and soii samples are taken from the
tube. The bore hole is advanced between sampling intervals with an auger, casing, or rotary driil bit
with drilling fiuid. When the ground surface is frozen, soil samples from the frozen zone are taken off
the flights of the hollow-stem auger.
Thin-Walled Tube Samolina (ASTM:D1587). Thin-walled tubes (2' or 3" in diameter and about 2'
long, and fitted with a bali check value) are pushed into the soil, then retracted. Relatively undisturbed
soil samples are extruded from inside the tubes.
Rock Corino IASTM:D21131. A diamond or carbide bit on a double-tubed barrel is rotated into rock
to the desired depth, then retracted. Rock samples are taken from the inner tube.
Auaer Borinas. Two procedures are available in drilling power auger borings: "spinning" and "pulling."
• Soinnino - The auger is drilled into the ground in increments of 5' or less. The auger is then
spun rapidly. Soil "rides up" the flights of the auger to the ground surface, where sampies are
taken. In general, this method results in reasonably accurate identification of the soil profile
above the ground water table, but it can be very misleading below the water table, particularly
in sandy and gravelly soiis.
• Puliina - The auger is drilled into the ground and then withdrawn to a6ove the ground surface.
The general soil protile can be observed, and samples of materials adhering to the auger are
taken. In general, this method is considered to be a little more accurate than the spinning
method in soil above the ground water table, and more accurate than the spinning method in
soii below the ground water ta61e.

Solar Array Installation
To Whom It May Concern:
We have reviewed the documents and photographs provided by Powerfully Green relating to the installation of the solar
array at the above-referenced site. Based upon our review, it is our conclusion that the installation of the solar array on this
existing roof will not adversly affect this structure. It is our understanding that the structural components of the existing roof
framing are in good condition and free of damage. The design of the solar panel racking (mounts, rails, etc.) is by the
manufacturer or contractor. Please note a representative of Vector Structural Engineering has not physically observed the .
roof framing.
Design Parameters
Code:Minnesota State Building Code,2015 Edition(2012 IBC)
Risk Category: II qo
Design wind speed: 115 mph (3-sec gust)per ASCE 7-10
Wind exposure category: C ,'3
Ground snow load: 50 psf
Existing Roof Structure
Roof structure: manufactured trusses @ 24" O.C.
Roofing material:asphalt shingles
Roof pitch:4.5:12 C ^S : 13-
Connection to Roof
Mounting connection: (1)5/16"lag screw w/min 2.5"embedment at max.48"O.C.
Conclusions
Our conclusion regarding the adequacy of the existing roof is based on the fact that the additional weight of the solar array is
3 nit 3 psf or less. In the area of the solar array, other live loads will not be present or will be greatly reduced. Regarding snow
loads, because the panels are slippery and unobstructed, effective snow loads will be reduced in the area of the solar array.
The member forces in the area of the solar panels are decreased; thus, the stresses of the structural elements are decreased.
Therefore, the requirements of Section 1103.3 of the MBCC are met and the structure is permitted to remain unaltered.

The solar array will be flush-mounted (no more than 6" above the roof surface) and parallel to the roof surface. Thus, we
conclude that any additional wind loading on the structure related to the addition of the proposed solar array is negligible.
The attached calculations verify the capacity of the connections of the solar array to the existing roof against wind(uplift),
the governing load case. The connections to the existing roof shall be spaced at 48"maximum.
Limitations
Installation of the solar panels must be performed in accordance with manufacturer recomendations. All work performed
must be in accordance with accepted industry-wide methods and applicable safety standards. The contractor shall notify
Vector Structural Engineering,LLC should any damage, deterioration or discrepancies between the as built condition of the
structure and the condition described in this letter be found. Particular attention must be paid to the maximum allowable
spacing of connections and the location of solar panels relative to roof edges. The use of solar panel support span tables
provided by others is allowed only where the building type, site conditions, site-specific design parameters, and solar panel
configuration match the description of the span tables. Electrical engineering is the responsibility of others. Waterproofing
around the roof penetrations is the responsibility of others. Vector Structural Engineering assumes no responsibility for
improper installation of the solar array.
