Re: Solar Installation on the house roof at the above location
Dear Brian:
You requested Complete Building Solutions, LLC ("CBS")to perform an investigation and calculations to
determine the capacity of the house/garage roof for a proposed solar collection system. We reviewed
the plans you sent to us and the information regarding the construction components of the home,
specifically the roof rafters and their related construction.
CBS has determined that the current construction of the house and specifically the roof will not
support the proposed solar collection system. This includes the potential snow loads during the winter
months. The roof does not currently meet the current building code requirements.
The structural changes necessary are not difficult and we will explain the necessary changes. It is our
professional opinion, it will be easiest to keep the solar collection system on the garage only because
of the amount of insulation and difficulty in accessing the attic. Below is a chart of what rafters need
to be sistered to accept this proposed load. Only certain length rafters need to be sistered (nine feet
in length and above), your current rafters are 2 x 6 framing material and you can sister them with
another 2 x 6. The sister can be located in the middle of the span of the current rafter, except the two
rafters we identified with minor cracks. Those two rafters need to have at least 2 feet of the sister
extend past the cracks.

When you add these sistering members to the existing rafters, your roof will meet the load necessary
to carry the snow load and up to 3.5 pounds per square foot of a solar collection array system.
