Nail down loose boards and replace any rotten ones (Fig. 3.1). B. Scrape off loase caulk and re-caulk around windows, d0ors and other areas to protect from moisture penetration. C. INSULATION Many types ot insuFation panels are available to increase the insulation value of exterior walls and provide a Iml, flat sur- face for siding installation. Consult insulation manufacturer's recommendations for best surface preparation. 3. NEW CONSTRUCTION - WALL PREPARAYION A. Framing studs should be plumb and pasitioned uniformty to provide a flat even surface far the sheathing. Using kiln- dried studs for framing will produce the best results. B. Wall sheathing can be made ot a variety of materials. To obtain the best results, use quality sheathing that will not ? buckle or warp. Exterior quality wood slteatliing should be properly conditioned and fasiened. This wi[f eliminate the possibility of swell9ng andlor distortion caused by unac- ceptable wall sheathing. Vnyi siding is not designed to correct uneven framing or buckled sheathing. 3. RE-SIUPNG --- WALL PREPIIRATIpN - FURRING, RAPPING and SHEATHING A. Applying weather resistant sheathing nver old siding is the fastest, easiest way to provide an even, nailable surtace for siding insta(lation. 8. If not using sheathing, then furring or strapping (usually 1" x 4" woad) shauld be used on uneven walls or masonry surfaces to provide an even nailable base. Shim out the furring at the high and low spatS t0 get a final even su?face. C. Furring should be horizontal forvertical siding (Fig. 3.2) and vertical ior horizontal siding (Fig. 3.3). Furring should he placed alongside doar and window frames and building , corners. Accessories shoufd be attached over furring where needed.
