As requested, we have visited the site identified above for the purpose of investigating
the condition of gazage roof framing that has been damaged by a fire. The framing spans
22'-0"t and has a pitch of approximately 4:12. The roof framing consists of 2x6 rafters
at 2'-0" o.c. with collaz ties at 4'-0" o.c. The garage is 14'-0"t long. The rafters and
collaz ties have been seat-cut to 4" at the inside face of the wall. The roof decking
consists of 6" nominal roof boards.
In first (5) rafter pairs close to the house, one ar both of the rafters have been damaged by
the fire, which apparently entered the garage attic space at the garage-house common
wall, and must be replaced. The lasf rafter pair at the garage end-wall appears to have
both rafters left intact. Much of the existing roof decking is charred and unusable.
The existing framing requires extensive repair, and much of the existing roof decking
needs replacement. Partial replacement of the roof decking would interrupt the roof
diaphragm, which lends support of the garage structure in resistance to wind forces.
Based upon our estimation of the lumber species and grade, the existing hand-framing
does not meet the current code requirements for snow load support. The seat-cut at the

bearing walls further reduces the capacity of the framing, and makes partial replacement
of the existing framing with properly bearing rafters difficult.
Based upon these findings, we recommend that the entire gazage framing be replaced
with new hand-framing (meeting the requirements of UBC Chap.23, Div. IV) or new roof
trusses, with new APA rated sheathing roof decking. Either option requires 40 psf. snow
load, in accordance with the Minnesottl State Building Code.
If the truss option is selected, the truss manufacturer shall verify span and pitch to match
existing.
