Dear Tom:
I am writing this letter to follow up our telephone conversation on
February 21, 1990. First of all I would like to thank you for your time and
assistance regarding the Rahn Road project. I appreciate your bringing our
concerns to the city council. I would like to readdress our concerns and provide
you with some new facts. As I indicated, we are not in favor of any trailway
system on Rahn Road. Since it has been decided that we are going to have a trail
run through our front yard, we would like to have the council consider some
possible improvements to the current trail plan. It is our understanding from
the City Council's motion at the public hearing & from subsequent letters that
the 36 foot road width will be maintained, no parking lanes will be provided
(north of Diffley), a bituminous trail will be constructed on the east side and
no trail construction will occur on the west side of the road. In addition the
road will be shifted to the west 3-4 feet and the boulevard between the trail
and road will be reduced to 4 feet.
There are 2 issues we would Iike to have addressed regarding the trail.
¦ Replace the bituminous surface with concrete
¦ Reduce the width of the proposed 8 foot trail
First, we would like to point out the advantages of a concrete versus a
bituminous surface.
¦ Concrete is longer lasting material than bituminous.
¦ Concrete would require lower maintenance.
¦ A sidewalk surface will cater to the current pedestrian traffic
on Rahn Road--walkers, many of whom walk out of necessity.
¦ It is much more likely that residents would shovel snow from a
concrete surface than a bituminous one. This would provide a four
season path for pedestrians.
¦ Bicyclers can also take advantage of a concrete trailway.
¦ Concrete is more aesthetically pleasing. This would make it easier
for us to live with as well as not affect the resale value of our
homes.
After speaking with Ken Vraa a few weeks ago, we have discovered that
concrete was used in place of bituminous on the east side of Nichols Road
beginning at Cliff Road and going north approximately 200 feet. As I understand,
the concrete was used in place of bituminous at the developers request.
Secondly, we would like you to consider a reduction in the width of the
trail. This would take up less of our yards and possibly save some trees and
shrubs.
Please bring this proposal to the attention of the city council. Thank
you in advance for your consideration of this matter. Please feel free to
contact us with any questions you may have.
