Mark Gergen & Associates, Inc. Project BODX-02-328C January 17, 2003 Page 2 ' Geopier Observations A Senior Engineering Assistant observed the construction of a number of geopiers on January 7 and 8, 2003. The geopier observations consisted of observing the soils removed from a number of the geopier locations and documenting pier depth and bottom soil type. Based on the auger cuttings observed during the drilling of the geopiers, the piers Braun Intertec observed extended 2 or more feet into the underlying natural sandy lean clay, clayey sand and silty sand soils. The geopier observations are summarized in the tables shown below. Table 1 Greyhawk Development Geopiers Observed by Braun Intertec On January 7, 2003 Lots 1 throu h 4 Block 2 Pier Number De th ft Bottom Soils Notes 13 13 Lean Cla with Sand a roximatel 2 feet into natural soils 74 14 Lean Cla with Sand a roximatel 2 feet into natural soils 60 13 Cla e Sand a roximatel 2 feet into natural soils 73 12 Sil Sand a roximatel 2 feet into natural soils 51 13 1/2 Sil Sarid a roximatel 2 feet into natural soils 49 12 1/2 Sil Sand a roximatel 2 feet into natuxal soils 56 13 Sil Sand a roximatel 3 1/2 feet into natural soils 50 12 1/2 Sil Sand a roximatel 3 feet into natural soils 54 13 1/2 Sil Sand a roximatel 2 feet into natural soils 48 13 Sil Sand a roximatel 2 feet into natural soils 42 14 Sil Sand a roximatel 3 feet into natural soils 45 11 1/2 Sil-ty Sand a roximatel 2 feet into natural soils . 39 15 Sil Sand a roximatel 2 feet into natural soils 37 13 %z Sil Sand a roximatel 2 feet into natural soils 34 11 Cla e Sand a roximatel 2 feet into natural soils 32 11 Cla e Sand a roximatel 2 feet into natural soils 26 15 Lean Cla a roximatel 2 feet into natural soils 29 13 Cla e Sand a roximatel 2 feet into natural soils . The results of both of these tests observed appeared acceptable. The Dynamic Core Penetration Test was observed on Geopier #48 with 50 blows for less than l.inch. The Bottom Stabilization test was performed on Geopier #34 with the following results 2 inches, 1 1/2 inches, 7/8 inclies, 1/2 inch. Conclusions Based on our observations and the design parameters we were provided, it appears that the geopiers we observed were properly constnicted, of adequate shaft length and properly founded in natural soils. Based on the quality control measures performed by PCI it appears that the contractor followed the proper procedures for geopier installation. Mark Gergen & Associates, Inc. Proposed Greyhawk Development Lots 1 through 4, Block 2 Eagan, Minnesota Professional Certification: I hereby certify that this plan, specification or report was prepared by me or under my-, direct supervision and that I am a duly Licensed Engineer under the laws of the State of Minnesota. , Gregory J. Bialon, PE - Associate Principal Registration Number: 24017 Project BODX-02-328C January 17, 2003 Braun Intertec Corporation Providing engineering and environ.mentaI solutions since 1957 BRAUN INTERTEC January 17, 2003 Mr. Mark Gergen . ' Mark Gergen & Associates, Inc. 18004 Jacquard Path Lakeville, MN 55044 Dear Mr. Gergen: Braun Intertec Corporation Phone: 952.431.4493 6950 West 146th Street Fax: 952.431.3084 Suite 131 Web: braunintertec.com Apple Valley, MN 55124 Project BODX-027328C Re: Summary of Geopier Observations, Proposed Greyhawk Addition, Lots 1- 4, Block 2, Eagan, Minnesota As requested, we have performed geopier observations on a paxt-time basis at the proposed Greyhawk Addition for the townhome building at lots 1 through 4 of block 2. The purpose of the geopier obs.ervations was to document the soil conditions near the bottom of the geopiers and observe the contractor's placement techniques and quality control. Available Information We were provided with a boring log (B-2) prepared by,Allied Test Drilling Company under number 02012. Backhoe test pits were performed in the proposed building pad, which were observed by Braun , Intertee. Up to 13 feet of fill was encountered in these test pits. The fill soils observed in the test pits appeared to be unsuitable for building support. We recommended removal of the unsuitable fill soils and replacement with engineered fill or utilizing a deeper foundation system like Geopiers. , We were provided a copy of a Geopier Soil Reinforcement Plan for the building at lots 1 through 4 of block 2. The plan was dated Decerriber 26, 2002 and was submitted by Geopier Foundation Company: This plan indicated the placement of 74 geopiers throughout the proposed building. The proposed geopier locations were staked by a surveyor prior to our arrival on-site. "A Design Submittal for: Geopier Building Support" prepared by Geopier Foundation Company, dated December 25, 2002 under project P02-PMM-0010 was provided. The Quality Control Packa.ge in the design submitted indicated the piers should go through the existing fill and 2 feet into the underlying brown silty clay. A minimum shaft length of 10 feet was required. Proposed Construction The proposed townhome building will be a two story, slab-on-grade structure with a finished floor elevation varying from 926.6 to 928.0 feet. The design specifications submitted by Geopier Foundation Company indicates that the maximum wall loading is expected to be a maximum of 3 kipsninear foot and that the allowable design bearing pressure after the proper placement of geopiers is not greater than 4500 psf. - Providing engineering and environmental solutions since 1957 ow ow o? vm.<ux . v:o.cA01d0u. v.o.w.o.
