For structural fiberboard,a 1-1/4"long roofing nail(.120)cited by code to be installed at 3"on center at the perimeter of the panels and 6"on center at the intermediate framing. Your framers used 16 ga staples with 7/16"crowns and 1-3/4"legs. ESR 1539 is the code report for the power fastener industry and provides lateral shear values for conventional nails and for other power driven fasteners like staples. As noted in Table 9 of ESR 1539,a 16 ga staple with a minimum of 1-1/2"leg at 3"on center at the panel perimeter has a lateral capacity sufficient to satisfy the prescriptive requirements of bracing. A 16 ga X 7/16"crown X 1-3/4"leg staple installed at 3"centers at the perimeter and 6"in the field of the fiberboard sheathing is an acceptable alternate to the roofing nails at 3"perimeter and 6"field attachment cited by the Minnesota State Building Code for bracing attachment of fiberboard sheathing. The tabulated seismic values must be reduced by 37 percent and 44 percent for normal and permanent load duration, respectively. "The tabulated values are for fasteners installed in Douglas Fir-larch or Southern Pine. For framing of other species: (1) Find the assigned specific gravity for species of lumber(see Section A1.3) (2) For staples find shear value from Table 7(regardless of actual sheathing grade) and multiply value by 0.82 for species with specific gravity of 0.42 or greater, or 0.65 for all other species. (3) For nails find shear value from the applicable table and multiply by the following Specific Gravity Adjustment Factor=[1 -(0.5—G)],where G=Assigned Specific Gravity of the framing lumber. This adjustment factor must not be greater than 1. 'Shear wall deflection must be determined in accordance with Section A3.0. 'Structural I and Rated Sheathing panels must comply with DOC PS1 or PS2. Install panels either horizontally or vertically. All panel edges must be backed by framing members. In structures assigned to Seismic Design category D, E, or F,where the allowable shear design value exceeds 350 plf, all framing members receiving edge nailing from abutting panels must not be less than a single 3-inch nominal member. Panel joint and sill plate nailing must be staggered in all cases. See Section 4.3.6.4 of SDPWS, or 2006 IBC Section 2305.3.11 for sill plate size and anchorage requirements, as applicable. "Space fasteners maximum 6 inches on center along intermediate framing members - Exception: When panel thickness is greater than 7/16-inch or studs are spaced less than 24 inches on center, space fasteners maximum 12 inches on center. "Nails must be bright or galvanized carbon steel, flat head nails denoted in Appendix B as meeting the head area ratio requirements for lateral force resisting assemblies.A deformed shank nail must have either a helical(screw)shank or an annular(ring) shank. Shear wall values for stainless steel nails are outside the scope of this report. 1DStaples must have a 7/16-inch minimum crown width and must be installed with their crown parallel to the long dimension of the framing members, and must be driven flush with the surface of the sheathing. "The values for 3/6-inch and'/16-inch panels applied directly to framing using nails may be increased to values shown for 15/32-inch-thick panels of the same panel grade, provided studs are spaced a maximum of 16 inches on center or panels are applied with long dimension across studs. lP - l7GGq RECEIVED Voigt & Associates, Inc. +r 4 8 2018 ' STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING SERVICES 4635 NICOLS RD. SUITE 204 — PAGAN MN 55122 PH.(651)686-7727 FAX.(651)686-8444 litI To whom it may concern June 15,2018 RE: Krznarcik residence at 4834 Richard Lane,Eagan,MN p tcl r t-, ` /4(160 It has come to my attention that there has been some confusion about the materials used to construct the house at the address above. Based on the approved plans(Section on page 2 of 5),I have been assessing the bracing requirements of this house assuming the use of method CS-SFB(continuous sheathing with structural fiberboard). Mr Pietsch informed me today that the house is continuously sheathed with OSB permitting method CS-WSP. This clarifies comments made by Tom Miklya about the fastener evaluation in fiberboard I provided a couple of weeks ago. Wood Structural Panels have greater bracing capacity than does Structural Fiberboard. I have recalculated the required bracing and was able to reduce the required bracing along Braced Wall Line 2. Please see braced wall line details in C-1.2,bracing wall plan update,BP-2.2 and half portal frame S2.2. The bracing requirements of the Minnesota State Building Code are based on prescriptive(typical)construction techniques and materials. For wood structural panels(OSB),a 2-1/2"long 8d Common nail(.131"dia.)is cited by code to be installed at 6"on center at the perimeter of the panels and 12"on center at the intermediate framing. Mr.Pietsch said his framers used 16 ga staples with 7/16"crowns and 1-3/4"legs to install the OSB wall sheathing with attachment at 3"on center at panel perimeter and 6"on center in the field. ESR 1539 is the code report for the power fastener industry and provides lateral shear values for conventional nails and for other power driven fasteners like staples. As noted in Table 8 of ESR 1539, 16 ga staples with a minimum of 1-1/2"leg at 3" on center at the panel perimeter has a lateral capacity greater than an 8d Common nail(minimum 2"penetration)with 6" perimeter nailing. A 16 ga X 7/16"crown X 1-3/4"leg staple installed at 3"centers at the perimeter and 6"in the field of the OSB sheathing is an acceptable alternate to the 8d Common nails cited by the Minnesota State Building Code for bracing attachment of OSB sheathing at 6"on center perimeter and 12"field nailing.
