I'vo performed the requested calculations on the above refer~n~ed system. The purpose
of these caiculations was to evaluate the double 2 z 8's wlvch cantilever 4'-0" with a
back spari _rif 5'-0". My calculations indicate that stresses and deflections are within
acceptable limits for a 60 psf ]ive.load.. The joists are to be connected at the house wifh a
metal hanger (USP double 2 x 8- 10 x 12). This hanger is adequate to prevent the joist
from lifting up in the `~vorst case" conditiott where there is a full ]ive load on the
canrilcver and no live tosd oh the baek sp~n.
My evaluarion of the deck was lunited ta these issues. Please give me a call ifyou have ~

As requested, a series of 42" high allowable guardrail configuretions irifilled with Y,"
tempered glass or pickets and acceptable guardrail mounting configurations have been
determined and are assembied on pages 23 to 45 inclusive and pages 12 to 17 inclusive
respectively of the AmeHcan Alco Ventures Vista Aluminum Railing Systems Design
ManuaL These configurations are in conformance with the structural load requirements
for balcony guardrails as specified in the following code: ~
. 2003 Intemationai Building Code section 1607.7.1 Handrails and guards
Since these configurations are designed to meet the most stringent appficabla
requirements of the above mentioned code, the 42" high allowable guardrail
configurations infilled with tempered glass or pickets and acceptable guardrail
mounting configurations referenced above also meet the criteria set out in the 1997 ~
Uniform Building Code and The BOCA National Building Code.

Dear Nicolas:
As raquested, wdve roviewed the capacity of your "Frost Footing". This footing coneists of a
2%" diametar 8 ga. galvan'~zed sbeel pipe bearing on a l5" diameter concrete pad. T'ho Coecrete
is poured at the bottom of an augured hole at frost depth. The steel pipe has an end plate and is
embedded in the concrate pad.
Our calculations indicate that the footin~ capacity is controlled by bearing stress on the soil.
With 1500 psf soil, tha footing capacity is about 1,800 pounds. By increasing the diametcr of the
concrete pad, the capacity of tha footing could be proportionally inereased. For exampla, a 24"
diameter paci would result in a 4700 pound capacity footing. We ~stimate the capacity of 1'he pipe
at about 8000 pounds which constitutes the upper limit of the footting capacity. Better soils will
also result in a higher capacity footing.
