Location of the work is on a residential tract of land located at 1700 Riverton Point, on the south shore of Blackhawk Lake. Legal description is as per the above title block. The work was performed for Bruce Olson, referred to hereafter as the "Owner". The investigation consisted of drilling three soil bor- ings and two percolation test holes on the site to determine soil profiles, water table elevations, percolation rates and other information to assess suitability for onsite treatment of wastewater. From this data, recommendations are developed for individual wastewater treatment system design. The area of investigation is a large platted residential lot located as noted above. Site terrain is characterized by a fairly continuous and steep slope (15 - 25%) from the road- way (Riverton. Point). to the lakeshore. Some short steeper slopes are also present, such as at the transition from road- 87076 -2- way grade to natural site grade and at an isolated area just south of the proposed residence location. The area is covered with fairly heavy woody vegeta- tion. At the time of this investigation, the house site and proposed drainfield location had been cleared of this vegetation and the house stake was staked. BORING AND TEST HOLE LOCATIONS AND ELEVATIONS The boring and percolation test hole locations were chosen by Allied Test Drilling based upon the staked loca- tion of the proposed residence and most desired drainfield location together with such other factors as topography, required separation distances. initial judgments as to proposed treatment system layout, etc. The soil boring and percolation test holes were ultimately placed within the anticipated site of the proposed treatment system to ob- tain representative soil profiles and percolation tests. These locations are shown on the attached sketch. Ground surface elevation at the borings and percola- tion test holes was determined and referenced to the top of a a surveyor's hub on the south side of the proposed garage location. This datum has a known reference eleva- tion of 839.77. SOIL INVESTIGATION The auger borings were performed using the Power Flight Auger (FA) method of investigation. Refer to the attachment (color-coded blue) for a description of this 67076 -3- method. Also contained on that attachment are descriptions of methods of soil classification and groundwater mea- surement. Attached is a log for each of the borings. The depth of individual layers of soil may vary somewhat from those indicated on the logs due to the inexact nature of auger sampling, the relatively small size of a 6" boring in com- parison to the size of the site under investigation, and the occurence of transition between soil layers. The borings indicate topsoil of from 3" to 1' in depth. Below that is silty clay loam and silty clay to 5 feet of depth. Clay loam and silty clay loam are present to termination of the boring. Groundwater is not observed in any boring by standing water. However, mottling (indicating a past groundwater level) is observed from 2 to 4 feet below surface. It is highest at Boring 3 and lowest at Boring 2, indicating that maximum groundwater approaches ground surface as ele- vation decreases near the lake. Based upon the above results, most soils appeared unn it.able for testing for percolation rates due to their fine grained nature (silty clay and silty clay loam) or their being within 3 feet of maximum groundwater level. However, soils very near the surface appear to be rather loose and permeable. Hence, the area of Boring 1 was deemed feasible for testing for percolation rates at a depth of about one foot. This is the maximum bottom ele- 87076 -4- vation that a standard drainfield can be placed without crowding maximum groundwater level. It assumes that, due to development and improved drainage in the area, maximum groundwater levels may be lowered somewhat. For the pur- poses of this report, this lowering was estimated to be 0.5 feet. PERCOLATION TEST PROCEDURE AND RESULTS Refer to the attachment (color-coded pink) for a de- scription of the procedure for performing a percolation test. Percolation Test Holes 1 and 2 were established in the vicinity of Boring 1. The percolation tests were per- formed on 16 and 17 May 1987 using two test holes to depths of 14 inches, the approximate anticipated levels of 'the bottom of the treatment system. The holes were pre- pared and saturated earlier. The reason that percolation testing was performed on two dates is that Percolation Test Hole 2 was disrupted by rodent activity and had to be prepared and saturated again. These percolation rates above 87076 -5- show favorable results at the levels tested. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS The groundwater conditions noted above in the vici- nity of the proposed treatment site together acceptable soil profiles good percolation test results indicate that a variety of configurations of standard systems will suf- fice for the intended purpose. Typical design exemplified herein is a shallow drainfield with drop boxes. The structure that the system will serve is a full basement with walk-out single family residence having three (3) bedrooms, approximately 4200 square feet (sf) of living area and more than two anticipated water use appli- ances (eg, clothes washer, dishwasher, garbage disposal, etc). This is a Type I residence having an estimated -wastewater flow of 450 gallons per day (gpd) according to the provisions of 6 MCAR 4.8040. Lines should not be located below the 87076 -6- steeper slope area just below the proposed residence loca- tion (maximum groundwater is too high here). And, of course, lines cannot be located too far upslope or drain- age level compromises may have to be made. If space proves to be a problem, the Owner should consider raising the grade of the house and moving it upslope or east somewhat to gain the necessary room for installation of lines. Also, as little as possible surface water should be diverted around the residence on this side. What water does run in the vicinity should be diverted around the drainfield trenches. Attached to this report are sketches of a typical shallow drainfield trench, drop box system, and drop box. During construction, soils encountered should be carefully monitored to assure conformance with those discovered in the boring and test holes. The septic tank and disposal facility should be loca- ted at separation distances as noted in 6 MCAR 4.8040. These distances are summarized in the tabulation attached to this report. The only additional advisory is that the treatment system be off limits to travel by foot or ve- hicles, or the area should be barriered to prevent this traffic. This is because such travel will compact the soil or drive the frost deep, possibly causing system failure. In the power flight auger procedure, a 6" diameter solid stem helical flight auger is advanced into the ground by mechanical/hydraulic means and withdrawn at appropriate intervals. Nature of subsurface soil is determined by ob- serving and sampling disturbed material found on the flight auger. Representative samples are retained, sealed, and stored for future testing or reference, if necessary. After cleaning the auger, it is inserted into the bore hole again and the process is repeated until the desired testing depth is accomplished or until refusal (failure to advance the auger due to bedrock, detached boulder, hardpan, etc,) oc- curs. A log of each boring is kept noting date, depth of changes in strata, description of soil in each major strat- um, groundwater conditions, and other date. The hand operated auger procedure is the same as above, except that the 1" to 3" auger is advanced into the ground by hand means. This type of boring is usually re- served for investigations to a shallow depth in an area fairly inaccessible by machinery. (over, please) Method of Investigation (cont`d) Unless otherwise specified, no tests upon inplece soil, such as for compaction, percolation, etc., were per- formed except, in some instances, to note the rate of drilling (a general indication of inplece compaction). Soil Classification Soils were classified by field personnel and verified by the Soils Engineer according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/OOT) triaxial chart. A reproduction of this chart showing composition by grain size percentages of the various soil class types is attached to this report. Groundwater I In order to establish the possible occurance of ground- water in the region of testing, one or more of the boring holes were allowed to stand for a period of time, that peri- od depending on the free-draining nature of soils encounter- ad, and then checked for standing water or cave-in prior to backfilling. In addition, soil samples were checked for mottling (discoloration the result of oxidation in water flucuation zone) and saturation. However, because of the nature of soil and due to va- rious meteorological and geological influences which occur over a large area and time span and which can affect the site, an accurate measurement of the highest annual ground- water or range in fluctuations thereof usually cannot be determined in the time frame and scope allowed for most investigations. Six inch diameter test holes are drilled using the power flight auger or hand auger method to the approximate anticipated bottom level of soil treatment trench. Soil profiles are noted. The sides of these holes are loosened to simulate actual conditions of an excavated trench and to negate any spearing effects of the auger. Two inches of 1/4 to 3/4 inch gravel is placed in the bottom of the 'hole as a splash pad, to prevent scouring, and the hole is re- inforced with rigid tubing to guard against cave-in. The hole is filled with approximately 8 inches of water and allowed to stand from 4 to 30 hours, depending on type of soil, to saturate. After this time, holes are refilled and, after another short period to stabilize, re- cordings of the drop in water level versus time are made. The average drop in water level is reported as the "perco- lation rate" in minutes per inch (mpi).
