Density Testing Proposed Single Family Residence Addition 3319 Roll Lane, Eagan, Minn Pa ✓Z/1✓ f /6 / 770 RECEIVED AUG 19 2020 This is to report that, on two occasions, including this date, I examined the area of excavation for the referenced proposed work. Afterwards I performed field and laboratory testing upon fill placed to correct a portion of the addition area and bring it up to grade. Please accept this letter and attachments as my findings and recommendations. The proposed structure is a full basement addition to the westerly area of the existing building. Two septic tanks were discovered within the expansion area. On 13 August 2020 I examined the existing situation, My report of that inspection is attached. Essentially I recommended removal of the tanks and any associated loose fill surrounding them and achieving natural soil, both as a base and laterally. I also recommended I examine the completed excavation and perform density tests upon fill placed in the excavation void. On this date' examined the excavation, finding the tanks to have been removed and naturally occurring mineral soil achieved. At that time I recommended placement of fill in accordance with my inspection recommendations. I observed the procedure and progressively performed three density tests as fill was placed. I was impressed with the manner of work, observing suitably thin lifts of fill for compaction and repeated passes ofthe compactor. One laboratory Standard Maximum Density (Proctor) test was later run. Attached are reports of field and laboratory tests. As can be seen, all tests pass (>95% of Standard Maximum Density), considerably exceeding the minimum. On the basis of the above, I am of the opinion that contact soils, naturally occurring or fill, will be suitable for residential foundation construction. Ordinary spread footings as anticipated may be used. This investigation is subject to the "Limitations of Investigation" as attached. Please accept this memo as my report of fmdings and recommendations thus far. The project in general is a full basement rear extension of the existing single family residence. Arriving onsite I could see that its level is to be about "one block" lower then existing. Exposed bottom soils appeared to be cohesive. Along the north excavation line the tops of two structures were exposed, apparently old septic tanks, covers removed. A cast iron line could be seen running from the house to the first tank. Existing tops jutted up about 8" above general excavation level. Interiors were filled with soil. I put down, or attempted, hand auger borings in each tank, plus one in the general excavation area. Findings are as follows: Boring 1 (Near tank, present surface level +8"): 0-6' LEAN CLAY, very dark colors (CL), overmoist, soft to very soft (fill) 6'-8' SAND, variably graded, tr fines, brownish colors (SP), moist, firm (natural) Ended @ 8' w/o refusal Boring 2 (Far tank, present surface level +8"): 0-3' SAND, varying gradations, varying fines content, darker colors (SP), w/ tr's other soils, colors, moist, loose to very loose (fill) 3-4' Similar LEAN CLAY fill as above (CL) - tr's concrete debris @ 4'- (fill) Ended @ 4' due to refusal - First attempt refused slightly shallower Boring 3 (In general excavation area, flush): 0-8" LEAN CLAY, Dark Yellowish Brown (CL), seemingly suitable (natural) 8"-2'/4' SAND, somewhat silty at first, cleaner with depth, moist, seemingly suitable Ended @ 2'/4' w/o refusal Bore holes left open Mr Erik Westberg 14 August 2020 Page 2 RECEIVED AUG 19 2020 I attempted a boring along the side of the far tank, about a foot from it, fording disturbed granular soil to about 3' of depth and then apparently undisturbed granular soil lower. This would indicate, at least at this point, that the excavation to install the tank was no more wider than necessary, having an almost vertical backslope. Surprisingly, there was no concrete bottom in at least the first tank. There was also no evidence of organic septic tank sediment. Such materials were either evacuated at the time of tank abandonment, or deteriorated over time. Obviously, the septic tanks, including the sewer line, cannot be left inplace, especially as they run along a new footing line. I recommend that the connecting pipes, tanks, contents, and any adjacent old backfill materials be removed. The above hand augering would indicate an excavation depth of 5.3', laterally slightly more than tank dimensions. Most likely this will result in a trench -like excavation along the bulk of the north footing line, with backslopes conforming to OSHA regulations. I should examine the excavation to assure that all unsuitable soil has been removed. Afterwards, the resulting void should be replaced with what is known as "controlled (or engineered)" fill (of good quality, oversized if necessary, compacted, tested). Fill placement recommendations are attached. The oversizing aspect of the excavation and refilling is not likely to be a factor. As fill is placed, I should perform density tests upon said fill.
