The purpose of the excavation observations was to aid in evaluating the suitability of the soils encountered in the excavation N1 bottom for fill and house support where the proposed house went off the graded house pad The purpose of the compaction testing was to aid in evaluating the suitability of the engineered fill " placed for house support. ~ Available Information No soil borings wexe performed specifically far the proposed house. Braun Intertec Cozparation r~i°: (Braun Intertec) performed soil borings for the Nature's Edge development. The results for thbse " r' borings were submitted in our report ritled "Geotechnical Evaluation", dated February 25, 2002 • (Braun Intertec project number BODX-02-008). `:i u'~~ .y At the time of our observations, we were provided with a certificate of survey prepared by Pioneer Engineering dated December 11, 2002. Survey hubs were set in the field by Pioneer Engineering po LL a and offset stakes were set in the field by Stocker Excavating. The exact house pad locarion is the . ~ ~ responsibility of others. ..~;.r ,~r~. Braun Intertec performed excavation observations and compaction testing during the site grading in : 2002. This work was performed under Braun Intertec project number BODX-02-129C. Lot 15 of Block 1 was a graded pad in which engineered fill was placed. After reviewing the location of the graded pad with the proposed house location, it is apparent that the nortt~/northwest corner of the f~ proposed house is off the graded house pad. ~ Proposed Construction e~~ . : The proposed house will be a full-basement, walkout type with an attached lriple garage. Basement ~ floor will be at elevation 933.0 feet and the gazage floor will be at elevation 9413 feet We assume ; Providing engineering and environmental solutions since 1957 v ~'>~i; aT:; -,s,: ~.,~n~ lis,.=;yr Manley Brothers Construction Project BODX-03-017C February 26, 2003 Page 2 the house will be supported by conventional spread footings designed for a soil bearing pressure not exceeding 2,000 pounds per square foot (ps~. Excavation Observations The excavarion observations were conducted by an engineering assistant on January 28, 2003. The excavation observations consisted of observing the soils exposed in the hottom and sidewalls of the excavation. The approximate density or consistency of the soils encountered in the excavation bottom were estimated by judging the force required to advance random, shallow (about 1 to 3 feet deep) hand auger probes. Soil classifications were deternvned in the field by examining the hand auger probe cuttings in general accordance with the American Society of Testing and Materials (AST'NI) procedures. Stocker Excavaring used a backhoe to remove about 2 to 5 feet of topsoil and/or topsoil fill and up to 2 feet of soft clay soils from the house pad and oversizing areas. The bottom of the excavation ranged from approximate elevation 922 in the northwest corner to 927 near the edge of the graded house pad. Soils encountered in the excavation bottom primarily consisted of lean clay to lean clay with sand that were judged to be in a medium to rather stiff condirion. The excavarion was oversized about 8 feet beyond the building lines. See the attached sketch which shows the approximate limits of the originally graded house pad, the excavation limits and bottom of excavation elevations. Fill and Compaction Tests The engineered fill used to establish foo4ing subgrade elevation was primarily an imported poorly graded sand with silt. The engineered fill was placed in about 1 foot loose lifts with a dozer then compacted with a self-propelled, vibratory sheepsfoot roller. It should be noted that engineered fill was placed up to footing (rear walkout) subgrade elevation of 928 feet. A total of 3 compaction tests were taken on the engineered fill placed to establish rear walkout footing subgrade. All tests met or exceeded the minimum density requirement of 95 percent of standard Proctor maximum dry density (ASTM D 698). The compaction test results and Proctor curve are attached to this report. Conclusions Based on the results of our excavation observarions and hand auger probes, it is our opinion the soils encountered in the excavation bottoms aze suitable for fill and house support. Based on the conslruction staldng provided by others, it is our opinion the excavation was adequately oversized for lateral support of the fill and house. Based on the results of our compaction testing, it appeazs the engineered fill tested met the recommended compaction for house support. Manley Brothers Construction. Project BODX-03-017C February 26, 2003 Page 3 General It should be noted that standazd penetration test borings with power equipment were not taken to evaluate the soils at depth on this lot. However, the soils which were visible and the results of the hand auger probes indicate that the risk of detrnnental settlement due to poor soils at depth is very small and we, thus, recommend that it be assumed by the owner. The cost for taking soil borings W better define that risk does not appeaz warranted. If site grading and construction is anticipated during cold weather conditions, we recommend fl~at good winter construction practices be obseroed. No fill should be placed on soils which have frozen or contain frozen soil. No frozen soils should be used as fill. All snow and ice should be removed from cuf and fill azeas prior to addirional grading. Concrete placed should be maintained at a temperahue in excess of 50 degrees Fahrenheit for a muumum of 48 hours following placement. Concrete should not be piaced upon frozen soils or soils which contain frozen material. Frost should not be permitted to penetrate below footings since such freezing could heaue and crack footings and/or the foundarion walls. Services performed by the geotechnical engineers for this project have been conducted with that level of care and skill ordinarily exercised by members of the profession currently pracricing in this area. No warranty, expressed or implied, is made. Thank you for working with Braun Intertec on this project.
