At your request, a site visit was conduated on Auqust 29, 2061 to ~
evaluate shallow inplace footings within the garage area of the
referenced residence.
Observations indicate that the footinqs at the northeast corner of the
garaqe, including 14 and 13 feet of the north and east wail
respectively, due not meet a 48 inch minimum frost footing depth for a
unheated structure. The average depth of the footings was measured at
22 to 24 inches Eront the base of the footings to the surrouadiag
ground surfaae.
We recommead the installation of 6 inches of insulation in aII areas
where minimum footing depth canttot be achieved. This can be
accomplished through the use of a high density commercial foam,
purchased in sheets, 2 inches thick, and cut ta size. The insu2ation
should extend a minimum of 10 to 12 inahes beyond the outside face of
the faotings. Completed backfill should provide positive drainage
from the foundation to minimize water iafiltration, as water saturated
soils at the base of the footings can accelerate freezing of the
subgrade soils.
