'fhe purpose of the excavation observation was to aid in evaluating the suitability of the soils in the excavatioa bottom for suppon of the proposed house. Avai{able Tnformation No soil borings were performed for the proposeA house. Braun Intertec Engineering, Inc. (Braun Intertec) performed ezcavation obsecvazions and compaction testing during the site grading of the Eagan Royale subdivision in the fall of 1987. 'Fhis work was done for Meritor Development. The results of our excavation obsecvations and compaction testing was inciuded in our "Update Report" numbers 1 through 3, with the last one dated November 25, 1987. Lot 27, Block 3 was a custom lot, and was not graded during the site grading in 1987. We were provided with a lot survey prepazed by Pioneer Engineering tided "Lot 27, Block 3, Eagan Itoyale" that was not dated. Bottom of excavations were referenced to information obtained from this lot survey. The lot survey indicates there is a drainage and utility easement that runs directiy along the east side of the proposed gazage. Proposed Construction We understand it is proposed to construct a two-story, single family dwelling with a full walkout base~ent and attached triple garage. The finished basement floor will be at elevation 920.55 feet and the finished gazage floor will be at elevation 928.33 feet. The house wiil be supported by conventionaE frost depth puimetec spread footings typical af residentiai construction. SUN-26-95 MON 17:58 SJOGREN ALLEN LEE HOMES 4404077 P.03 , ~ ~ ~ Merltor Development ProJecc BODX-92-046 April 22, 1992 Page 2 Excavation Observation The excavation observation was conducte~ by an engineering assistant on April 3, 1992. When we azrived on site, the footings and block walls for the propose~ house were already in place. When ihe coatractor went W hook-up the sewer and water services in the southeast corner of the proposed gazage, they encountered the trench backfill for the sanitary sewer stub that encroached approximately 1~ fcet into .the gazage azea and the trench backfill for the sanitary sewer main thaY travels near the east lot line. The sewer was estimated to be approximately 10 fe~ east from the southeast comer of the proposed gazage. The sanitary sewer service stub in the southeast comer of the proposed gazage was at approximate elevation 912t. Several hand auger probes were conducted in the uench backfill and in the natural soils below the sewer pipe. The trench backfill consisted of silry sand and clayey sand that was judged to be in a loose condition. It appears the sanitary sewer trench backfill was placed in an uncontrolled manner. Soils encounteretl below the pipe consisted of nazural silty sands and poorly graded sands with silt that was judged 6o be in a medinm dense to dense condition. We recommended that the uncontrolled fill be removed from beiow the footings and the footings on the south and east sides of the proposed gazage be stepged down to natural soils. The contractor removed the biock walls and footings on the south and east sides of the proposed gazage, then removed the uncontrolled fiil down to naturai soils in the soatheast corner with a backhoe. The bottom of the excavation in the southeast corner of the proposed gazage was at approximate elevazion 910 f. Along the south side of the proposed gazage, bottom of existing footing was at approzimate elevation 924±. The footings were stepped down to natural soils at appmximate elevation 920t, then to 915t, and finalty to 910t in ' the southeast corner (see attached sketch). The foetiao ~vere stegped do~;r. to naha*al soifs at approximate elevation 915± a(ong the entire east side of the proposed gazage to lessen the risk of settlement due to insufficient oversizing for lateral support of the proposed foundations. Several hand auger probes were performed in the natural soils at the bottom of the excavation. The soils encounteted primarily consisted of siiry sand to poorly graded sand with silt that was judged to be medium dense to dense in condition. Condusions Based on the results of our excavation observation, it is our opinion the soifs encountered in the bottom of the excavation once the uncontrolled fiil was removed along the south and east sides of ihe proposed garage aze suitable for support of the house loads.
