BUILDING INS ECTIONS DEPT.
' " . 1994 ENERGY CODE CALCULATIONS
' l SiNGLE 8 DUPLEX FAMILY HOMES
The following energy code requirements should be calculated and included with a building
permit application. (This list is r o intended to be an exhaustive and camprehensive report, but
is only intended to help you in complying with the basic requirements of the energy code. For
further information, please contact the Energy inrormation Center of the State of Minnesata ai
296-5175. )
~ Roof - ceiling assemblies - R-38 Ceifing insulation allowed it Advanced or
Improved framing techniques are used.
Advancad = ceiling framing that achieves full
insulating value to the outside of exterior walis.
e.g. energy trusses. Improved = min. 7-1/2"
between the wall top plate and roof sheathing.
- R-44 Ceiiing insulation required at rafters or trusses
that are framed without Advanced, or Improved,
framing technique.
U= 0.026 Average over entire cailing area.
~ in ceilings without attics, insulation must be R-38 between framing us it is suggested thai
R-5 sheathing be instailed on the csiiing side (e.g. 2" x 12" framing at vauits/dormers:
scissars trusses; etc.
i
? Exterior wails $ rim joists - R-19 Typicai wall insuiation at 2" x 6' stud framing.
U= 4.11 Average over entire wall area, including
windows, doors, and framing.
? Floors over unheated spaces - R-24 Typicai floor insulation beiween floor joists.
U= 0.04 Average over entire floor area.
? Foundations (all exterior walls) - Minimum of R-10 insulation ftom the top of the
foundation wall Lo the top of the footing.
- All insulated areas must be separated from the heated space by a weil-lapped, or sealed,
vapor barrier with a maximum perm rating of 0.1. A 4 mil. poly sheet,. or equivalent, meets
this requirement.
? Al) penetrations, such as but not limited to fire-stops, vent pipes, wall outlets, recessed light
fixtures, etc., should be seaied.
~ An air-impermeable barrier must he provided where insulation is susceptible to intrusion
(wind-wash) of outdoor air (e.g. at attic knee-wails, exterior wall plate line at rafters,
cantilevered floors, etc.).
- A Kraft face R-19 type insulation will be accepted in the rim joist areas. Air chute baffles
are to he placed in each rafter space.

'R' value = the reciprocal of'U'
Thererore, 'U' = 1/'R' ~i 'R' = 1/'U'
~ The smaller the 'U' value, the greater the insulating capabilities of a component
The laraer the 'R' value, the greater the insulating capabilities of a component.
~ 'R' values can be obtained for each of the various components of a buifding section (assembly) and then
added together to compute the = 'R' value of that seciion (assembry). But note that you gannot add 'U'
vaiues of the various comoonents of a buiiding secfion (assembiy) to obtain an "overall" 'U' value.
NOTE: The foilowing are typicai 'R' values for the items listed:
