Dear Mr. Abrahamson:
This letter concerns our observations of an addition to the single
family residential structure located at the above referenced
address. Framing for a two story addition behind the original
attached garage has been completed. The original attached garage
has roof trusses aligned perpendicular to the front of the garage.
The front roof slope of the garage was continued upward to tie into
the addition. This required a link of roof rafters extending from
the original garage roof ridge to the front wall of the addition.
The link extends in a horizontal projection about 8' to 9' over the
original back roof slope of the garage. We understand the
homeowner would like to incorporate the area below the roof slope
link into a storage area. On December 19, 2006, you. requested our
services to make observations of the garage and addition to
determine the structural requirements to provide a storage area.
It is our opinion all of the structural elements to provide a
storage area under the roof link are already in place. The
original back slope of the roof was constructed to carry 40 pounds
per square foot live loadings. This structural capacity can be
used to carry live loadings from the proposed storage area.
Increased dead loadings from the link construction would decrease
allowable live loadings for a storage area. It is our opinion the
link area below the roof can be finished into a storage area
recognizing the allowable live loading requirement. We recommend
a live loading not exceeding 30 pounds per square foot be used in
the storage area. We also recommend that a sign be posted on the
inside of the storage entrance indicating the 30 pound per square
foot limit in the storage area.

Overloading the storage area to 40 pounds per square foot in our
opinion would not cause structural failure, but may cause an excess
deflection in the garage roof trusses beyond the design criteria.
Many older homes in the area have floor framing using 2 X 6's at
the third floor level. Some of these areas are used for live
occupational loadings or storage loadings. They have a typical
live loading capacity of 30 pounds per square foot within the
design deflection requirements.
