The purpose of our services for you on this project is to obtain subsurface soil and ground water information in the area of the ' proposed structure. Specifically, the city building inspector asked that two soil borings be drilled along the front side (nearest the street) of the proposed dwelling. Based on the obtained information, we will provide comments concerning the , subsurface conditions to assist you and your design consultants in planning and constructing the project. ' Scone in order to accomplish the project purpose, you have authorized us to perform two test borinqs and to perform a geotechnical engineering review which is being presented to you by this report. ' Findinas The basic soil profile encountered in the boring consists of fill ' overlying natural inorganic soils (glacial till). Fill was encountered to a depth of about 10' below the present ground surface at the soil boring locations. , Recommendations The following recommendations are in condensed form for your convenience. It is important that you study our entire report for ' detailed recommendations. • The existYng fill, as encountered in the soil borings, should , provide adequate support for the foundations and floor slabs. Foundations constructed on the fill soils can be designed based on an allowable soil bearing pressure of up to 1500 psf. t ' ' _ ' ~ ~ . ' AET ~90-1013 --Page 2 ' , INTRODUCTION ~ You are proposing to construct a single-family dwelling in Lot 20 of Block 6 at the Stafford Place subdivision in Eagan. Further, you have authorized American Engineering Testing, Inc. (AET), to , conduct a subsurface exploration program and provide geotechnical engineering comments for the project. This report presents the , soil and ground water information we ohtained at the site and our geotechnical engineering comments. , To protect you, AET, and the public, we authorize use of opinions ' and recommendations in this report only by you and the project~team for this specific project. Contact us if other uses are intended. Even though this report is not intended to provide sufficient ~ information to accurately determine quantities and locations of particular materials, we recommend that your potential contractors ' be advised of the report availability to them. ' Scone of Services In accordance with our December 14, 1990 proposal letter, our , authorized work scope is limited to the following items: • Drill two test borings to explore subsurface conditions alonq , the front of the proposed single-family dwelling. ~ • Prepare a data report including the boring logs and our geotechnical engineering comments concerning the proposed ~ construction. , Project Information We understand that you are proposing to construct a split-entry single-family dwelling in Lot 20 of Block 6 of the Stafford Place , subdivision in Eagan. The dwelling will be of wood frame ' - 1 ~ . ' AET ~90-1013 - Page 3 1 ' construction and one-story in height with the basement and garage floor at elevation 855.5 and 858.3, respectively. We generally ' associate relatively light structural loads with the proposed single-family residential construction. ' The above information represents our understanding or assumptions of the proposed project. This information is a very important part ' of our engineering review. It is important that you contact us if there are changes from that described or assumed, so that we can ' evaluate whether changes in our recommendations are appropriate. ' Backaround Information Prior to the development of the Stafford Place residential development, Geotechnical Engineering Corporation (now American ' Engineering Testing, Inc.) conducted a subsurface exploration program for the development. The results were included in the ~ report of GEC Job No. 4939, dated May 28, 1987. 1 We also performed observations/tests in conjunction with gradinq done in the referenced lot in 1987. Generally, slopewash (soils ' that had eroded onto the site) and organic topsoil were removed from below the proposed structure and replaced with compacted fill. The results of our observations/tests were included in the report ' of GEC Job No. 4858, dated December 3, 1987. , SITE CONDITIONS ' Surface Observations An excavation for the proposed dwellinq was completed prior to our , recent arrival. The excavation extends about 3'-4' below the existing ground surface. ' ~ ' ' , AET #90-1013 - Page 4 ' , The subject lot is relatively flat. Proposed surface drainage is from the dwelling down toward the street in the front and down , toward the north end of the lot behind the dwelling. Subsurface Soils ~ We drilled two soil borings at the site on December 14, 1990. We located the borings in reference to building setback lines and the ~ existing excavation. The borings were drilled along the front of the proposed garage, as shown on the Site Plan in the appendix of ' this report. , We refer you to the boring logs attached to this report for the specific information concerning soil layer depths, soil description, and penetration resistance (N-values). The field ' sampling methods are described on the attached data sheet under the subheading "Standard Penetration/Split-Spoon Sampling Method". ' Soil identifications and descriptions on the boring logs are in ~ general accordance with the ASTM Visual-Manual (D2488) system, as shown on the attached sheet entitled "Identification of Soils." It ~ is important to note that the subsurface conditions only indicate the material classification/properties at the sampled locations and variations do occur bezween and beyond borings. , Fill was encountered to a depth of about 10' below the qround , surface. The fill is basically inorganic and comprised of a mixture of fine qrained (clayeyJ and coarse grained (sandy) soils. , Penetration resistances (N-values) recorded in the fill indicate the fill is medium stiff/stiff to medium dense. ~ Underlying the fill is natural inorganic soil (qlacial till). The glacial till is generally sandy soil with N-values indicating it is ' medium dense. ' ! ' AET ~90-1013 - Page 5 ' ' Water Level Measurements No free ground water was noted in the bore holes when the borings ~ were drilled. With the exception of one sample in Boring #1 which was wet (at the bottom of the 14=' to 16' sample), the soil samples recovered in the borings appeared moist. Many of the soils at the , site are slow draining and our period of observation was quite short. Therefore, an accurate indication of the ground water level , could not be obtained. A piezometer(s) would need to be installed to establish the ground water level. ~ Both seasonal and yearly fluctuations of the ground water level ' should be expected. We refer you to the attached exhibit entitled "Boring Logs: Ground ' Water Information," for additional information on water level measurements. , ENGINEERZNG REVIEW OF CONDITION3 ' Review of Soil Properties , • Strength - In terms of soil strength, it is our judgment that the fill and natural inorganic soils (glacial till) are favorable. , • Compressibility - It is our judgment that the fill and glacial ' till are relatively incompressible and as such they should provide suitable support for foundations and floor slabs. ' • Frost Susceptibility - It is our judgment the site soils in ~ the freezing zone are moderately frost susceptible to frost susceptible, , i ~ ~ AET #90-1013 - Page 6 ' ~ Review of Ground Water Conditions A water table was not encountered in the boring; therefore, ground water should not impact the project. ~ RECOMMENDATIONS ~ Foundation Recommendations ' It is our judgment the foundations for the proposed dwelling can be supported on conventional foundations placed directly on the fill ' encountered in the borinqs. We recommend perimeter foundations for heated building space be ' placed at a depth such that a minimum of 42" of soil cover is provided for frost protection. Interior foundations for heated ' building space can be placed at a convenient depth below the slab. Where foundations do not border normally heated building space ' additional frost cover is recommended since frost penetration is anticipated to be deeper. We recommend these types of foundations ' be provided with a minimum of 60" of soil cover. In addition, a slip-surface (such as two poly sheets or clean sand fill) can be placed alongside foundation walls to protect against frozen soils ~ adherinq to and lifting (heaving) such walls. ~ It is our judgment the foundations can be placed on the fill or glacial till. It is our opinion the foundations can be designed , based on a maximum allowable bearing pressure of up to 1500 psf. It is our judgment this design will include a factor of safety of ~ greater than 3 against shear or base failure. It is also our judgment that total settlements should be less than 3/4", and ~ differential settlements should be less than 3/8". ~ 1 1 ' AET ~90-1013 - Page 7 ' ' Floor Slab Sunnort It is our opinion that the existing fill can be left in-place below floor slabs. ' Slabs bearing on soils in areas where moisture permeation through ~ floor slabs is undesirable (e.g., carpeted areas, areas where adhesives are applied to the concrete, etc.) should be underlain ' with a 6" layer of free draining granular soil and a vapor barrier (poly). The vapor barrier should be placed below (rather than ' above) the granular soil to prevent curling of the concrete. Construction and Post Construction Ground Water Control i We do not e~cpect there should be any significant problems with respect to ground water during excavation for and construction of ' footings. However, some of the on-site soils are fine grained and as such are considered moisture sensitive. Such soils can become ' difficult to work with when exposed to excessive moisture (due to precipitation, site drainage, etc.). ~ As a good construction practice, areas surrounding the dwelling should be properly graded and maintained to allow runoff of surface , water. ~ CON3TRIICTION OBSERVATION AND TESTING ' The recommendations in this report are based on the subsurface conditions found at our test locations. Soil conditions can be ' expected to vary away from the soil boring locations. Because of this, on-site observations during construction is highly recommended to evaluate these potential changes. ' ~ ~ ! , AET ~90-1013 - Page S ' ' E%PLORATION PROGRAM LIMITATIONS The data derived through this sampling and observation program have ' been used to develop our opinions about the subsurface conditions at your site. However, because no exploration program can reveal ' totally what is in the subsurface, conditions between borings and between samples and at other times, may differ from conditions , described in this report. The exploration we conducted identified subsurface conditions only at those points where we took samples or ' observed ground water conditions. Depending on the sampling methods and sampling frequency, every soil layer may not be observed, and some materials or layers which are present in the i ground may not be noted on the boring logs. 1 Unless actually observed in a sample, contacts between soil layers are estimated based on the spacing of samples and the action of ' drilling tools. Thus, most contacts shown on the logs are approximate, with possible upper and lower limits of contacts ' defined by the overlying and underlying samples. Cobbles, boulders, and other large objects generally cannot be , recovered from test borings, and they may be present in the ground even if they are not noted on the boring logs. If conditions encountered during construction differ from those ~ indicated by our borings, it may be necessary to alter our conclusions and recommendations, or to modify construction ' procedures, and the cost of construction may be affected. The extent and detail of information about the subsurface condition ` is directly related to the scope of the exploration. It should be understood, therefore, that additional information can be obtained , by means of additional exploration. ~ ' . , AET #90-1013 -.Page 9 1 ~ STANDARD OF CARE Our services for your project have been conducted to those ' standards considered normal for services of this type at this time and location. The size of drilling tools and related equipment is indicated by a ~ number or letter. Examples: 1) a hollow-stem auger with an inside diameter of 3-1/4 inches is shown as 3-1/4 HSA; 2) a B size core barrel is shown as B core. I 2. In highly resistant material: a) The standard penetration test consists of driving the sampler with ' a 140-16 hartuner and counting the number of blows applied in each of three 6-inch increments of penetration. If the sampler is driven less than 18 inches, as permitted in ASTM-D1586, the blows for each ' complete 6-inch increment and for each partial increment is recorded on the boring log. For partial increments, the number of blows is shown over a bar or slash and the partial penetration less than 6 inches is shown to the nearest inch below the bar or slash. ' b) The length of sample recovered, as shown on the "REC" column, may be greater than the distance indicated in the N column. The disparity ~ is because the N-value is recorded below the initial 6-inch set (unless partial penetration defined in ASTM D1586 is encountered) whereas the length of sample recovered is for the entire sampler drive. ' ~ , , ' FIEL~ SAMPLING AND TESTING METHODS ' Page 1 of 2 ' Standard Penetration/Split-Spoon Sampling Method. In this method, a steel split-barrel sampling tube is driven into the soil with a 140-pound hammer ' droPped from a height of 30 inches (the hammer is dropped onto a rod attached to the sampler). The number of hammer blows required to drive the , sampler tube 1 foot into the ground (after an initial set of 1/2 foot) is recorded as the standard penetration resistance (N-value) of the soil for ' the sampling interval. (Penetration of less than 18 inches is permitted under ASTM 1586.) When driving is complete, the sampler is retracted and opened, and soil samples are taken from the tube. The bore hoie is t advanced between sampling intervals with an auger, casing, or rotary drill bit (with drilling fluid). When the ground surface is frozen, soil samples ' from the frozen zone are taken off the flights of the hollow-stem auger. (Details of this method are described in ASTM D-1586.) ' Static Cone Test. This field test determines the static cone bearing pressure of the soil--that is, how much resistance the soil has to penetra- ' tion by a cone-shaped point. The cone bearing pressure (q~ value) is equal to the maximum load applied to the cone divided 6y the area of (the base ~ of) the cone. Two types of penetrometers are used, mechanical and manual. Mechanical cones are pushed hydraulically with the drill rig and the maxi- ' mum load is measured with a hydraulic load-cell. Manual cones are pushed by hand and the load on a manual cone is determined with a calibrated proving ring. , Thin-Walled Tube Sampling Method. In this method, thin-walled tubes (2 or ' 3 inches in diameter and about 2 feet long, and fitted with a ball check valve) are pushed into the soil, then retracted. Relatively undisturbed ' soil samples are extruded from inside the tubes. (Thin-walled tube sampling is described in ASTM D-1587). ' Corin9. In this boring method, a diamond or carbide bit on a double-tubed barrel is rotated into rock to the desired depth, then retracted. Rock ' samples are taken from the inner tube. (Rock coring is described in ASTM D-2113.) ' ! ~ ~ ' FIELD SRMPLING AND TESTING METHODS age o ' Auger Borings. Auger borings are drilled by hand ar with a power-driven , auger. , The hand auger method consists of drilling the auge~ into the soil in increments of approximately 4", then retracting the auger and o6serving the material recovered. This allows almost continuous observation of the soil , profile. ' Two procedures are available in drilling power auger borings: "spinning" and "pulling." , - In the spinning procedure, the auger is drilled ,into the ground in increments of 5' or less. The auger is then spun rapidly. Soil ~ "rides up" the flights of the auger to the ground surface, where samples are taken. In general, this method results in reasonably ' accurate identification of the soil profile above the ground water table, but it can be very misleading - particularly in sandy and t gravelly soils - below the water table. - In the pulling procedure, the auger is drilled into the ground and then ' withdrawn to above the ground surface. The general soil profile can be observed, and samples of materials adhering to the auger are taken. In ' general, this method is considered to be a little more accurate than the spinning method in soil above the ground water table, and more accurate than the spinning method in soil below the ground water table. ' , ~ ' , ~ ' ° . BORING LOGS: GROUND WATER INfORMATION ' (Page 1 of 2) ' ' Ground water information is shown under "Water Level Measurements" at the bottom of the log and in the "MC" (moisture condition) column on the right ' side. Because the presence of water in the soil and the level of the ground water table can change over time, the information presented is , accurate only for the date and time the observations and measurements were made. ' The following information (in addition to the sampling date and time) appears under "Water Level Measurements": , ° The sampled depth, which is the lowest depth of soil sampling at the time of the measurement. ' ° The casing depth, which is the depth to the bottom of the casing ' or hollow-stem auger at the time of the measurement. ° The cave-in depth, which is the depth at which the measuring tape ' stops in the bore hole. ° The water level, which is the point in the bore hole at which free- ~ standing water is encountered with the measuring tape. If free- standing water was not present above the cave-in depth, the word "wet" , or "dry" in this column indicates whether soil adhering to the end of the measuring tape appeared to be wet or dry at the cave-in depth. ' ° The drilling fluid level is similar to the water level, except that the liquid in the bore hole is drilling fluid. ' The water level, drilling fluid level, and cave-in depths are measured with ' a weighted measuring tape. , ' ' , ' , BORING LOGS: GROUND WATER INFORMATION , (Page 2 of 2) ' The "MC" column indicates the moisture condition of soil samples. A"D" ~ in the column means that a soil sample appears dry (absence of moisture, dusty, dry to touch); "M" means moist (damp but no visible water), and "W" ~ means wet (visible free water). (NOTE: An isolated "W" at the top of the ~ boring, over a column of "D's" or "M's" m~ be an indicator of recent ~ thawirtq of frozen soi] in the top ]ayer.) The water level sym6al ~ in the "MC" column indicates the estimated pasi- ' tion of the qround water table in the boring. A water level symbal with a downward-pointing arrow means that the water table is interpreted to be at ' or below the ]evel indicated. A water level symbol with an upward-pointing arrow means that the water level is interpreted to be at or above the depth ~ indicated. The absence of the water level symbol on a log does not necessarily mean that ground water was not encountered or that the water table or piezometric surface was not penetrated. ' Overaii, determining the position of the ground water tahle is an interpre- ~ tive process that depends on such factors as water level measurements, the presence and type of drilling fluid, the condition of samples, su6surface conditions, site conditions, whether the bore hole is covered or open, and r weather conditions. Because of these factors and those noted previously, the actual ground water level in the field may vary from that shown on the t boring logs. ~ , ' ' ~ ~ i 12,19/90 15 52 Fil 612 4S~ 9087 FRONTIER DEV CO ,y,,, ~J002 ~ ~S'r`"'~~~`~~ . - . ~ ~ . < o ' r,~',~~ ,-c~' ~ ~ s ~ T'~ ~ r.
