T1-e prob,-?s indicated loose soils within the upper 6 inches to 1 foot of the c;<ca.a??ion. with u increase in soil strength beyond 2 ;.,, 2 feet. A moderate increase in soil moisture was indicated at. the base cf the prJbes, but no ground water migration was observed. .. olatcd areas of root f ibe'i-s .a*_ footing el .vatlon were judged 3(-c,eptable. as concentration and size did not exceed -accepted >1S. ?.a -;:d c)n the aforementioned observations, it was recommended to the cc, ntr actor. that the soils within they footing lines and loadbear:1"1g pad ai-?-as be re-consolidated with a hand vibratory compaction device prior to footing placement.. To evaluate corrective measures and the relative loadbearing capacity of soils at depth, dynamic cone penetrometer tests were a3nducted ?>n 10/7!02 , at the kipper level and walkout footing lines (N' cor.). The dynamic cone penetrometer (DCPuses a eight Kilograrn (17.6 pound) hammer to drive a 20 millimeter diameter conical point into the soil, with, the penetration recorded in ?nillime:t_ers per blow. Thc: DIP was advanced a total of '?14 millimeters (36 inches) at the upper level footing and 875 millimeters (34 inches) at the walkout f:x:, tina . A composite, per blow, penetration average of 34.3 MM and 32.8 MM respectively was recorded. Our experience with the DCP in similar soils would indicate a N- value (normalized to 1 foot) of 9 to 9 1/2 for the penetration at each location. This N-value, is an empirical relationship we have established to equate the dynamic cone data to the more familiar blows per foot (BPF) standard penetration soil boring test. Based on this data, we would predict a relative loadbearing capacity of 2500/3000 PSF or greater for the underlying soils. In our opinion, the observed subgrade soils and proposed footing design are acceptable and therefore the site is approved for construction. sinter ly, I TestingZ- i *, Compa l1 L . OCT 10 2002 RE 1536 Skyline Drive - Eagan, Dakota County, Minnesota 30th ANNIVERSARY At your request, a site visit was conducted on October 2, 2002 at 12100 P.M., by Zak Roowala, Instant Testing Co. technician, to evaluate subgrade soils prior to footing placement for the construction of a single family residence. At the time of arrival, the house pad area and been to excavated to approximate footing elevation exposing a moist, natural fine sand. To assess the relative consolidation of the subgrade soils, handauger probes were conducted at basement and walkout footing e.le.%ticn, representating cuts of 5 and 1 1/2 'foot respectively. the probes indicated loose soils within the upper 6 inches to 1 foot of the excavation, with a increase in soil strength beyond 2 1/2, feet. A moderate increase in soil moisture was indicated at the base of the probes. but no ground water migration was observed. Isc,lated areas of root fibers at footing elevation were judged acceptable, as concentration and size did not exceed accepted L??cls. on the aforementioned observations, it was recommended to the co m_ractor, that the soils within the footing lines and .loadbearing pad areas be re.-consolidated with a hand vibratory compaction device prior to footing placement. To evaluate corrective measures and the relative loadbearing capacity of soils at depth, dynamic cone penetrometer tests were conducted on 10/7/02 , at the upper level and walkout footing lines iNE cor i. The dynamic cone penetrometer (DCPuses a eight kilogram (17.6 pound) hammer to drive a 20 millimeter diameter conical point into the soil, with the penetration recorded in millimeters per blow. The DCP was advanced a total of 914 millimeters (36 inches) at the kipper level footing, and 875 millimeters (34 inches) at the walkout footing. A composite, per blow, penetration average of 34.3 MM and 32.6 MM respectively was recorded. 14 Our experience with the DCP in similar soils would indicate a N- value (normalized to 1 foot) of 9 to 9 1/2 for the penetration at each location. This N-value, is an empirical relationship we have established to equate the dynamic cone data to the more familiar blows per foot (BPF) standard penetration soil boring test. Based on this data, we would predict a relative loadbearing capacity of 2500/3000 P5F or greater for the underlying soils.
