Dear Dave: Friday, April 30'x, I inspected the basement concrete block wall at a location below the garage, and near a vertical sewer line and sewer cleanout. At that location, there was a crack that had been tuck- pointed and thereby esthetically repaired. Since the crack was essentially vertical and did not seem to be comparatively larger at the top than the bottom, I would attribute the crack to be a shrinkage dcrack not that was not a swous structural break. I believe the crack will not continue to open. believe it to be a sign of significant structural failure. A diagonal shear crack would have been more of a concern indicating differential settlement. It is my opinion, the repair will take care of the visual separation. I do not consider that the crack is an indication of a structural problem. I have similar cracks in my basement that have been there for almost 20 years and they have not proven that the basement block walls were of any imminent danger of failing. Hairline cracks of this nature are common in block walls. If the cracking were to continue, please contact me and I will again evaluate the situation.
