Dear Mr. Foertsch:
In accordance with your authorization, Braun Environmental
Laboratories, Inc. (BRAUN) conducted environmental soil
borings at the referenced site (Site). The location of the
Site is shown on the attached map. The purpose of these
environmental soil borings was to identify the presence or
absence of contaminated soil associated with the fuel
pipeline on the Site.
Three standard test penetration borings (ST-1, ST-2, and ST-
3) were completed at the Site. The results of the borings
are summarized in this report.
Soil samples obtained during the boring operations were
scanned for the presence of volatile organic compounds
(VOCs) by an on-site technician using an Organic Vapor
Analyzer (OVA). No indications of existing soil
contamination were encountered during the boring operations
at the Site. OVA results are summarized on the attached OVA
Field Data Sheets.
Please refer to the attached report for a complete
discussion of our analyses and conclusions.

- A. INTRODUCTION
A.1. Purnose: The purpose of the environmental soil borings was
to identify existing subsurface contamination at the Site based on
the Scope of Services outlined below.
A.2. Scope The services provided for this project consisted of
the following:
- Three standard test penetration borings (ST-1, ST-2, and
ST-3) were conducted on the Site, and
- Visual inspection and on-site monitoring of the soil
borings with an organic vapor analyzer (OVA).
Based on the results of these activities, this environmental soil
boring report was prepared.
A site history investigation was not within the scope of services
for this project.
A.3. General Geoloaic Conditions: Surface deposits in the area
of the Site consist of end moraine deposits associated with the St.
Croix Moraine of the Superior Lobe, Late Wisconsin Glaciation
(Hobbs, Goebel, 1982, Geologic Map of Minnesota, Quarternary
Geology).
The Ordovician bedrock surface below the area of the Site lies at
an elevation of approximately 600 Peet above mean sea level. The
surface elevation at tha Site is approximately 900 feet above mean
sea level, which indicates a depth of approximately 300 feet of
unconsolidated glacial till.

Local groundwater flow was not determined. However, regional
groundwater flow may be toward the Mississippi River to the north.
B. TESTING
B.I. Borina Locations and Elevations: The boring locations were
selected on the basis of underground utilities and the location of
the pipeline. Locations of the borings are shown on the attached
site sketch. Elevations for these borinqs were taken using the
manhole, located in the cul-de-sac of Sunwood Court, as a 100-foot
reference.
B.2. Field Testinq and Samplina: The penetration test borings
were performed with a truck-mounted core and auger drill. Sampling
for the borings was conducted in accordance with ASTM D 1586
"Penetration Test and Split-Sarrel Sampling of Soils". Using this
method, the bore hole was advanced with the hollow-stem auqer to
the desired test depth. Then, a 140-pound hammer falling 30 inches
drove a standard, 2-inch OD, split-barrel sampler a total
penetration of 1h feet below the tip of the lead flight of the
hollow-stem auger. The blows for the last foot oP penetration were
recorded and are used as an index of soil strength characteristics
and for stratigraphic correlation. Samples were taken at 5-foot
intervals to the termination depth of the borings.
B.3. Groundwater Measurements: Immediately after taking the Einal
sample in the bottom of the boring, the bore hole was probed
through the hollow-stem auger to check for the presence of
qroundwater. Immediately after withdrawal of the auger, the bore
hole was again probed and the depth to water or cave-in was noted.
The boring was finally checked and then backfilled in accordance
with the Minnesota Department of Health Water Well Construction
Code prior to leaving the Site.
B.4. Soil Classification: Soils encountered in the borings were

visually and manually classified in the field by the crew chief in
accordance with ASTM D 2487 "Unified Soils Classification System"
and ASTM D 2488 "Recommended Practice for Visual and Manual
Description of Soils". A copy of ASTM D 2487 is attached. All
samples were then returned to the laboratory for review of the
field classifications by an environmental geologist. Representative
samples will remain in our Minneapolis office for a period of 60
days to be available for your examination.
B.S. Contamination Detection Procedures: During the field
sampling, soils were inspected visually for unusual staining as
well as scanned with an OVA to determine if hydrocarbon vapors were
present.
C. RESULTS
C.1. Lo s: Log of Boring sheets indicatinq the depths and
descriptions of the various soil strata, the penetration
resistances, and water level information are attached. The depths
shown as changes between the strata are approximate. The actual
changes may be transitional, and the depths of the transitions
likely vary horizontally.
C.2. Groundwater Measurements: Groundwater was encountered in the
soil borings at depths ranginq from 16 to 18 feet with the
hollow-stem auger in the ground.
C.3. Soils Encountered: Generally, the soil borings encountered
sandy silt, fine- to medium-qrained with some roots and pebbles.
ST-2, taken in the bituminous pavement of the cul-de-sac,
encountered approximately three inches of bituminous and the
underlying sandy silt fill. Below this fill was approximately 18
feet of poorly qraded sand which was considered to be fill, added
pursuant to pipeline leak associated soil abatement. The mottled
soils encountered in ST-3 may have been displaced from the area of
ST-2.

C.4. Contamination Detected: Hydrocarbon contamination was not
detected in the soil borings with the oVA meter. Further analysis,
therefore, was not conducted. (See attached OVA Data Sheets.)
D. CONCLUSIONS Our on-site observations revealed no unusual
staining in the soils sampled. In addition, the scanning of soil
samples did not indicate detection of hydrocarbon vapors in the
soil borings. It appears that the soils sampled are not
contaminated with VOCs or petroleum product.
E. GENERAL The analysis and recommendations submitted in this
report are based upon the data obtained from the soil borings
performed at the locations indicated on the attached site sketch.
Subsurface contamination was not detected in our borings. Based
on the existing pipeline locations, the borings were placed in
areas that would not disrupt underground utilities and, in our
opinion, would best intercept subsurface contamination.
Services performed by the geologists and environmental scientists
for this project have been conducted in a manner consistent with
that level of care and skill ordinarily exercised by members of the
profession currently practicing in this area under similar budget
and time restraints. No warranty, expressed or implied, is made.
