Dear Mr. Christopherson:
Re: Excavation Observarion and Compaction Tesring, Proposed Pool at 3958 Thames Avenue, Lot
1, Block 2, Perron Acres, Eagan, Minnesota
As requested, we recently completed observations of the excavation to remove fill and buried debris and
performed compaction tesring of the fill placed for the proposed pool at the above address.
Available Information
Braun Intertec conducted a geotechnical evaluation for the Perron Acres Residential Development in
2001. Results of our evaluarion were summarized in our report dated July 31, 2001, under Braun Project
number BODX-0 1-0141. A boring was not conducted on Lot 1, Block 2.
Braun Intertec also provided construcrion observations and testing services dunng the site development ,
in 2001 and 2002. Results were summanzed in our report dated August 19, 2002, under Braun Project
number BODX-01-283C.
During the mass gading Lot 1, Block 2 was excavated to a depth of about 2 feet to remove topsoil. The
excavation bottom elevarions ranged from about 858 in the rear to about 868 in the front. The house pad
was graded for a 50-foot deep pad and was oversized 6 to 7 feet in the rear. Compaction tests were taken
during the filling operarion to establish grade For the pad (872 front to 863 rear less the hold-down).
Buried debris was not observed on this lot during the grading procedures.
The proposed pool is 16 feet by 32 feet with the 32-foot dimension paralleling the rear oF the house. The
west edge of the pool is about 10 feet east of the rear of the house. The bottom of the pool slopes from
about a 2 to 3 foot depth on the north end to 8 feet deep on the south end.
Observations and Testing
Our first observations were conducted on April 16, 2004. During the excavation for the pool, the pool
conhactor encountered fill and buried debris during the excavation for the pool. Stocker Excavating was
then called in to remove the fill and debns. The debris consisted of cans, bottles, carpet, tires, old
appliances, etc. No debris was observed [hat appeazed to be hazardous. During our first observarion, we
recommended that all the fill and debris be removed from the pool and oversize area.
The fill and debris was removed and we observed the excavation bottom soils on the aftemoon of April
16, 2004, as well as the moming and aftemoon on April 19; 2004. The excavation was taken down to 8
to 9 feet below finish grade on the north end of the pool to 8 to 15 feet below finish grade on the south
end of the pool. The deepest area of the excavation was in the southwest corner. Oversizing of 4 to 6
Providmg enginzering and environmencal solu[ions since 1957

Page 2
feet was provided along all sides of the pool. The fill and debris did not extend into the graded house
pad. The fill and debris ended about 6 to 7 feet east of the house.
The natural soils encountered in the excavation bottom consisted of poorly graded sand with silt and silty
sand. Based on our shallow hand auger probes, the natural soils were in an estimated medium dense
condition.
Sand and silty sand were imported to fill the excavation. Compaction tests were taken as the fill was
placed. Six compaction tests and one retest were taken. Results indicate adequate densities were
obtamed. Results of the compacrion tesu are attached.
Conclusions
Based on our excavation observations and shallow hand auger probes, the natural soils encountered
appear suitable for support of the fill and loads imposed by the pool. Based on the pool dimensions
referenced to the rear of the house, adequate oversizing was provided.
Based on the results of our compaction testing, adequate densities were obtained in the engineered fill
placed and tested.
