My understanding is that presently the columns at the exterior wall are placed so that the interior plywood sheathing and the (1) layer of 5/8" gypsum board will run past the column, completely enclosing the column within the exterior wall. In reviewing the Code, for Type of Construction V -B, no fire -resistance is required for the exterior walls or structural frame (IBC2000, Table 601), so we feel the (2) layers of gyp. bd. as detailed would not be necessary at these locations.
