We placed a series of shallow hand-auger borings within the exposed soils to aid in,judging the local subsurface soiI conditions. The soils were visually and manually classified in accordance with the USCS and estimates were made of their strength properties. The exposed soils did not appear significantly disturbed and were judged to be suitable for foundation support or placement of engineered fill. Soils consisting mainly of clayey sand were the predominant native soil types encountered after the unsuitable soils had 6een removed. DENSITY TESTING We have reported the results of inptace soil density tests under separate cover. Our work was limited to docuxnenting the soil conditions at footing level and the depth of embedment of the footings and to provide recommendations for ' insulating the footings should they require insulation. We did not testlobserve the soils regarding their foundation support characteristics. The attached Daily Report was drafted at the Elliott residence. As noted in the report, we observed that the soil cover was inadequate for portions of the east, west and the entire north footings of the proposed garage. The report goes on to provide our recommendation for insulation of the footings. As indicated in the report, we recommend that 4 inches of rigid insulation be attached to the foundation wall, extend down the foundation wall, across the top of the footing, down the side of the footing and out 3 feet from the footing.
