The HDPE rew material utilized in Carefree Building Products is derived
from post-consumer bottle waste such as milk and detergent bottles. This }
material is cleaned in Carefree's decontamination process to a high purity
~
level, which removes conkaminants such as food residue, paper and `
adhesives. It is then compounded into a rigid board stock material with
the resulting finished product containing over 90% recycled plastlc by weight.
Because Carefree Building Products are made with a single, purified polymer, it is manufactured to exacting,
reproducible specifiqtions. It has exceptional resistance to corrosive substances, oil and fuels, insects, fungus,
salt spray, and other environmental stresses. It does not absorb moisture; therefore it will not rot, splinter or
crack.
Carefree producks are manufactured in many dimensionai lumber sizes, shapes, and colors. Planks, posts,
rails, balusters, tongue and groove, groove and groove, and many specialty profiles are available. The product
comes in many wood tones and popular colors wch as: Sand, Weathered Wood, G2y, Cedar and White.
Carefree Building Products have excellent weathering resistance; however, as with other polyolefins, it is
possible that tlie material will fade slightly over the service life of the product. The product requires no
waterproofing, painting, staining, or similar maintenance when used in many exterior applications.
BASIC USES
Carefree products are used in many conventional wood lumber applications, and are often the product of
choice for exterior applications where weathering resistance and low mainYenance are required.
Used in both residential and municipal applications, Carefree Building Products are well suibed for decking,
porch flooring, docks, piers, fumishings, fencing, and lawn and garden items. Carefree products are cost
effective altematives for ground contact and animal contact, wet, and environmentally harsh conditlons.
LIMITATIONS
When utilizing Carefree products for decking or flooring, careful attention must be paid to joist spacing; joist
spans will depend upon which Carefree deck board is installed. Please refer to Table i, Remmmended Jois,

INSTALLATION
Carefree Building Products can be fabricated and insWlled with the same tools used to work wood lumber. The
product wili cut and drill very cleanly, as there is no grain to split or chip. It is not necessary to pre-drill the
plastic lumber when fastening. Screws offer the best form of attachment, however naiis and staples may also
be uUlized in some applications.

When installing Carefree deck boards, conside2tion should be given to expansion and contraction, and gaps
should be provided between the boards. For example an eight foot board of Carefrne products may expand or
contract approximately V<" over a SO degree temperature change. To determine the effect of temperature
change for a specific application, use the formula: .000055 X length of board in inches X degrees F of
temperature change = inches of expansion or contraction in the length dimension.
Gaps are necessary at the ends of the planks when butting end to end and at intersections with walis, posts,
or other fixed elements. For 16' deck boards, allow 3i16" gap for every 200F difference in installation
temperature and the highest anticipated ambient temperature during the year. Noticeable thermal expansion
occurs lengthwise only.
Note: In direct sunlight, darker colors absorb more heat, and may exaggerate expansfon and contraction. It is
recommeaded that lighter cotors be used in these appiications.

WARRANTY
Carefree Building Products come with a 50 year limited warranty. The product is warranted not to rot, split,
crack, or splinter during this period. The material will be replaced if the product does not perform as stated.

MAINTENANCE
Carefree Building Products are unaffected by most corrosive substances, and will not absorb moisture. To
maintain the original finish, clean tfie lumber with saap and water. No seaiing or painting is required; as a
general rule, paint wilf not adhere to Carefree Building Products.
G2ffiG can be cleaned from the plastic lumber with the use of a mnventional all-purpose cleaner or petroleum
based cieaner.
If the skin or surface layer of plastic lumber becomes marred or blemished, it is possible to sand off the top
skin. The surface can aiso be buffed to eliminate abrasions.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Carefree Building Products are impervious to paint and most adhesives; therefore these materiais are not
recommended for use with the product.
Carefree products have been tested by Underwribers Laboratories and meet Flammability Standards
established by the ASTM and accepted by the American Fire Marshalls. The product has a melt temperature of
approximately 270°F and a flash point of approximately 6201F. It has a higher Hashpoint that wood, and it
must be exposed to a severe combustion source for a longer period tlwn wood to ignite the product. But like

As requested, we designed new structural members for the above referenced project. We have designed the
new members using a roof dead load of 15 psf and a roof snow load of 35 psf in accordance with the
Minnesota State Building Code. Our work only includes designing the new members as shown at the above
reference project and is based on drawings provided by you and from our conversations.
Attached are 2 framing sheets with annotated framing notes showing the new r�embers and connections. All
framing shall be shored and temporarily braced as required by the contractor and all minimum nailing shall
be in accordance with IRC Table R602.3(1). Lumber shall be minimum #2 SPF. Our calculations assume all
lumber is of good quality and does not have large splits and checks and shall be visually inspected by the
contractor at the time of construction. The existing footings/foundations and framing below have been
assumed to be typical while performing adequately.
When installed as indicated above,the new framing members shown on the attached sheets shall support
the loads as required in accordance with the Minnesota State Building Code. If you have any questions or

Dear Chris:
As requested,we analyzed existing structural members for the above referenced project. We have analyzed
the members using a roof dead load of 15 psf, a roof snow load of 35 psf, and a 90 mph nominal wind design
load in accordance with the Minnesota State Building Code. Our worH;only includes analyzing the entry tall
wall framing and is based on drawings provided by you, our site visit, �and from our conversations.
Each horizontal window top and sill plate shall have 3—10d nails each end to the trimmer studs. The south
trimmer studs shall be nailed to the existing king studs with 10d nails 12"oc. The tall wall studs are
adequate as installed. All framing shall be shored and temporarily bra,ced as required by the contractor and
all minimum nailing shall be in accordance with IRC Table R602.3(1). Existing lumber is assumed to be#2
SPF, which was common at the time the house was constructed. Visually,the headers and studs appear to
be in good condition.
When installed as indicated above, the entry framing members shall support the loads as required in
accordance with the Minnesota State Building Code. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free
