As authorized by Mr. Dave Johnson of Srocker Excavating on September 15, 1994, we have
conducted excavation observations and compaction testing for the proposed house at the
above-referenced lot. The purpose of the excavation observations was to aid in evaluating the
suitability of the soils exposed in the excavation bottom for fill and house support. The
purpose of the compaction testing was to aid in evaluating the suitability of the engineered fill
placed for house support.
Available Information
No soil borings were performed for the proposed house.
At the time of our observations, we were provided with a CeRificate of Survey prepared by
Delmaz H. Schwanz Land Surveyors, Inc., dated September 1, 1994.
House corner offset stakes were set in the field by Delmaz H. Schwanz Land Surveyors, Inc.
&raun incertec excavation oversizing measurements, bottom of excavation elevations and
compaction test locations and elevations were referenced from these offset stakes. The exact
house pad location is the responsibility of Stocker Excavating.
Proposed Construction
The proposed house will be a full-basement walkout type with the basement floor at elevation
938.0 feet and gazage floor at 946.0 feet. We assume the house will be supported by
conventional spread footings designed for a soil bearing pressure not exceeding 2,000 pounds
per squaze foot (psf).

Excavation Observations
The excavation observations were conducted by a senior engineering assistant on
September 16 and 19, 1994. 1'he excavation observations consisted of observing the soils
exposed in the bottom and the sidewalis of the excavations. The approximate density or
consistency of the soils encountered was estimated by judging the force required to advance
random, shallow (about 3 feet deep) hand auger probes. Soil classifications were determined
by ezamining the hand auger probe cuttings.
Stocker Excavating used a backhoe to remove 3 to 10 feet of previously placed silty sand fill
overlying 2 to 3 feet of topsoil at the front of the proposed house pad (north). Approximately
1 to 3 feet of topsoil was removed with a backhoe from the rear of the proposed house pad
(south).
The bottom of the excavation in the house azea ranged from approximate elevation 930 at the
north end of the excavation near the northwest corner of the proposed basement to
approximate elevation 940 in the southeast comer of the proposed basement. The bottom of
the excavation in the gazage azea ranged from approximate elevation 934 in the northeast
corner to approximate elevation 940 in the southwest corner.
At the lower elevations at the front of the proposed house, the soils encountered in the
excavation bottom primazily consisted of lean clay with sand that was judged to be in a rather
stiff to stiff condition. At the higher elevations at the rear of the proposed house, the soils
encountered in the excavation bottom primazily consisted of clayey sand and silty sand that
was judged to be in a medium dense condition.
The excavation was oversized to provide at least a 1 H:1 V(1 horizontal:l vertical) slope
from the bottom of footing elevation to bottom of excavation elevation. The oversizing
ranged from approximately 5 to 12 feet at vazious locations azound the proposed house.

T'he engineered fill placed to establish bottom of footing grades primazily consisted of silty
sand. The engineered fill was typically placed in approximate 1-foot thick lifts with a track
loader, then compacted with a lazge, self-propelled vibratory sheepsfoot roller.

Compaction Tests
A total of eight compaction tests were performed in the engineered fill placed for house
support. All tests exceeded the minimum density requirement of 95 percent of standard
Proctor density (ASTM D 698). The compaction test results and Proctor curve aze attached
to this repoR.
Conclusions
Based on the results of our excavation observations and hand auger probes, it is our opinion
the soils encountered in the excavation bottoms aze suitable for fill and house support.
Based on the construMion staking provided by others, it is our opinion the excavation was
adequately oversized.
Based on the results of our compaction tesu, it is our opinion the engineered fill placed is
suitable for house suppoR.
General
It should be noted that standazd penetration test borings with power equipment were not taken
to evaluate the soils at depth. However, the soils which were visible and the results of the
hand auger probes indicate that the risk of detrimental settlement due to poor soils az depth is
very small and we, thus, recommend that it be assumed by the owner. The cost for taking soii
borings to better define that risk does not appeaz warranted.
Services performed by the geotechnical engineers for this project have been conducted with
that level of care and skill ordinuily exercised by members of the profession currently
practicing in this area. No wananty, expressed or impiied, is made.
