Excavation within the northwest corner of the pad had been extended 35 feet to the south and over excavated in two steps 2 3/4 and 3/4 feet respectively, to remove unsuitable soils consisting of organics, tree debris and tires. A sloping lens of organics observed within the north wall of the excavation indicates possible organics and unsuitable material may extend into the unexcavated garage area. Soils at the base of the excavation ranged from a slightly plastic loamy sand in the southeast to a plastic loam in the northwest. Probes conducted at random indicated a acceptable level of consolidation. A 3 foot hand auger probe conducted at the south edge of the 35 foot cleanout zone indicated a firm, dark brown clay at depth. No ground water was observed within the excavation or probe hole. 9/17/02: Organics and unsuitable soils had been removed within the garage area with excavation depths to suitable soils averaging 2 to 3 feet in the east stepping to 5 feet in the west. Approximately 3.6 feet of fill will be required to proposed footing elevation. It is our understanding that the west footing line of the garage will be filled to house footing elevation to facilitate utility installation. In our opinion, the referenced corrections and observed subgrade soils are acceptable, and the pad is approved for backfill.
