Our work was performed between the dates of June 21 and 24, 1974, at the request of Mr John Turner of Turner Excavating Co. It is our understanding the proposed structure will be a single family dwe119ng with a walkout basement. We have no information concerning the design bear9ng loads, but assume the foundation design will be relativety light, on the order of 1500 psf. The foundation plan is to excavate all existing fill and inferior natural soils down to the dense under- lying sandy clay and then replace with an engineered fill to floor grade. Perimeter frost footings would then be excavated within the engineered fill. All footings would then bear on control1ed fill soils. The purpose of our work was to assure that all old fill and inferior and/or disturbed natural soils were excavated including a sufficient 7ateral oversize equal to the depth of eaccavation below footing grade. Furthermore, it was the purpose of our work to assure that the engineered fiTl placed was suff5ciently compact to adequately support the bearing loads. INVESTIGATION METHODS AND RESULTS On June 21, 1974, we performed an initial 9nspection of the excavation. The results of a pre7iminary soil investigation conducted at this site by Soil Exploration Co and reported to the firm of Irmalee Construction Co on May 13, 1974, were available for our use and inspection. Stripping operations were complete throughout the excavation except in the sauthernmost margin and the southwest corner. A lateral oversize of 10' was maintalned on al1 sides of the excavation. Several shallow hand auger borings were put down within the excavation to o6serve the local subsurface soil conditions. The soils recovered were visually and manually classified in accordance with the Unified Soil Classificat9on System and estimates were made of their strength properties. The exposed soils within the excavation were natural soils composed of brown to gray silty and clayey sand. These soils correlated wlth those indicated in the preliminary soil investigation report and were suitable from which to commence fill ptacement. At the time of our iriitial inspection, the traxcavator was working the south and southwest corner of the excavation. The operator was having difficulty removing the saturated and disturbed sandy clay within this region. The vibration and movement of the machine was pumping up water from below and disturbing the sails as fast as they could be removed. At one po9nt, the traxcavator became completely bogged down within the spongy disturbed soil. It was our recanmendation that stripping operations with the traxcavator be discontinued, and we recommended the use of a dragline ar backhoe to complete the excavat5qn AS A MUTIIAL PROTELTION TO CLIGNTB. In this manner the underlying materiat would be left undisturbed. On June 22, we made a second v9sual inspection of the excavation. At this time all dis- turbed so11s had been removed by the use of a backhoe. Approval was given to commence backfi111ng and compaction operations of the engineered fill. Subsequently, several compaction tests were taken within the fill as it was placed and compacted to final gradea Initially, a test was performed in the low area of the excavation in the southwest cornew. Three additional tests were taken at or just 6elow footing grade and final1y one at floor grade. All field density tests were taken in accordance with ASTM:D1556-64 (44 Basis)o The results of these tests were compared to the laboratory moisture-density relation of soils as designated by ASTM:D698-70 (Standard Proctor). As shown on the attached test report, all areas tested exceeded the recommended relat9ve density of 95%. REMARKS Based on the results of the preliminary soil investigation, our inspection and testing, it is our opinion the soil foundation system for the proposed residence will adequately support the design 6earing loads.
