It is our understanding'that the completed s"oundation excavation may be approximately 15" below grade, iequiring the placement of engineered fill. 1/20/09: Observations made within the foundation excavation indicated soils consisting primarily of a medium sand with some gravel, with isolated areas along the north pad line containing a clayey sand. To evaluate the strength of the soils, a 5/8th" diameter smooth.probe was used at random to penetrate the footing lines within che excavation for the house and garage. With full body weight applied, the p'robes indicated penetration consistent with soils of aLcceptable consolidation. A 1 5/8th inch fluted handauger probe extended to a depth of 2 feet within the northeast section of the excavation, indicated dry granular soils at depth, with no groundwater infiltration observed. To assess the relative loadbzaring capacity of the subgrade soils, 2 dynamic cone penetrometer tests weie conducted. The dynamic cone penet-rometer'(DCP), employs a eight kilogram (17.5 pound) hammer to drive a 20 mi3Timeter diameter conical pa_nt into the soil, with tne penetration recorded in millimeters per blow. From the DCP readings, a per blow, penetration average was recorded ar_d a N-value derived. This N-value, is an empirical relationship we have established to equate the dynamic cone data to the more familiar blows per foot (BPF) standard penetration soil boring test.
