A certificate of survey prepared by James R. Hill, inc. dated June 21, 2005 was conveyed to us bg the contractor at the site. It is our understanding tYiat the 2ot was graded, and a engineered fili pad constructea around 1956. A topographic plan viewed at the site, indicated that approximateiy 9 feet of engineered fi11 may be anticipated within some sections of the pad. At the time of the inspection, the build area had been excavated consistent with proposed footing and foundation depth requirements 'Por the house and garage, with'the exception of a portion of a:' step-out at the northwest corner of the hoi:se. Soils consisted of a plastic sandy loam, with a thin concentration of gravel and some scattered cobble. An isolated zone of dark soils, approximately 7 feet in lengttx, was observed within the southwest section of the waikout footiny -uY2nch. Tlie refzrenced soil3 are stained (characteristic of ho•rizon "S"), buL contain no deteci.aule organic u3ors or vegetation. T]-ie soils as observed within the waikout trench rrtay indicate that the rear footing line intersects the oversize zone, or exter.ds beyon3 tha original engineered fiil pad. Two :.est aits excavated at the southwest corner of the pad indicated a similar soil p:ofile with isolate3 patches of dark soil. Soil moisture within the site was well beiow optimum, with no groundwa'i,zr infiitration noted. To evaluate the screngtl^, of the scils, a 5/3th inch diameter smooth orobe was t:sed to penetral.e soils at xandom along the pe::imetet footing lines, and aaross the base of the excavation. With full body weight applied, the probes indicated -a hign level of consolidation, including the area of dark soil_ within the suuthwest section of the walkout trench. Jul 21 08 02:33p P•2 To assess the relative toadbearing c:apacity of the soils, dynamic cozie penetrometer tests were conciucted aiong proposed footing lin2s at 3 locations. The dynamic cone penetrorneter (DCP), uses a eight kilogram (17.6 pound) hammer to drive a 20 millimeter diameter conical point into the soil, with the penEtration recurded in millimeters per hlow. From the DCP readings, a per blow, penetration average was recorded and a N-value derived. This N-value, is an empirical relationship we have established to equate the dynamic cone data to the more familiar blows per foot (BPF) standard penetration soil boring test.
