As requested, a site visit was made on June 19, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. to evaluate soils and reported
debris uncovered during the excavation for an addition at a walkout single-family residence. At the
time of the inspection, the proposed build area had been partially excavated at the rear northwest
section of the residence, extending north approximately 20 feet and exposing a large quantity of
buried tree debris. A benched section of the excavation had been completed adjacent to the
residence extending out approx. 6'/2 feet, and to the depth of the house footings or 3 %feet, and
then down 7 to 7 % feet to the excavation base.
Observations made within the excavation sidewall, parallel to the rear of the house, indicated
approximately 4 feet of clay, underlain by 3 feet of tree debris. This debris may extend back to, and
below, the existing house footings. A 1 5/8" diameter fluted hand auger probe put down, at the
base of the excavation, indicated a firm fat clay, a thin zone of silt, and well consolidated sand at
38". Soil moisture increased at depth, with isolated patches of water at the excavation base, and a
small quantity of water infiltration noted at the south wall of the excavation.
To assess the relative bearing capacity of the excavation subgrade, testing was conducted with a
dynamic cone penetrometer. The dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP), employs a eight kilogram
(17.6 pound) hammer to drive a 20 millimeter diameter conical point into the soil, with the
penetration recorded in millimeters per blow. From the DCP readings, a per blow, penetration
average was recorded and a N-value derived. This N-value is an empirical relationship established
to equate the dynamic cone data to the more familiar blows per foot (BPF) standard penetration soil
boring test.

Before leaving the site, observations were made while the contractor carefully excavated a test area
towards the rear wall of the residence. Within 2 to 4 feet of the structure, all buried unsuitable
materials had been removed. We would therefore anticipate acceptable soils below the house
footings and foundation.
In our opinion, upon removal of all unsuitable soils and debris from the proposed build area, the
contractor can make build adjustments with a well graded granular or aggregate. With the noted
correction, the observed and tested sub-grade soils are acceptable, and would be expected to meet
an assumed minimum bearing capacity requirement of 2000 PSF for the proposed construction.
Our observations and subsequent soil evaluation on this date is limited in scope to soil conditions
observed within the completed excavation, and to the depths achieved by shallow probes and a
dynamic cone penetrometer test. Therefore, we are unable to assess sub-grade soils, which may
be encountered by borings conducted as part of a standard subsurface geotechnical investigation.

As requested, a site visit was made on July 1, 2013 at 10:45 A.M. to evaluate a soil correction
implemented as part of our initial investigation report, dated June 19, 2013.
At the time of the inspection, all unsuitable materials had been removed from the build area, and a
backfill consisting of a 3A" crushed limestone placed. Except for the 2 bulkheads, the 20" x 8"
footings had been poured. It has been requested that we evaluate the correction zone backfill for
consolidation or Toad bearing capacity. It is our understanding that approximately 3 feet of the
crushed aggregate was placed and bucket tamped to provide consolidation. Unfortunately, this
open graded material cannot accurately be evaluated for bearing capacity by normal test methods.
Our experience indicates that this aggregate bridges well, and consolidates with minimal effort
within a 3' placement depth.
To provide some data relative to the capacity of the underlying cohesive soils at the correction zone
base, a dynamic cone penetrometer test was conducted adjacent to the north footing. The dynamic
cone penetrometer (DCP), employs a eight kilogram (17.6 pound) hammer to drive a 20 millimeter
diameter conical point into the soil, with the penetration recorded in millimeters per blow. From the
DCP readings, a per blow, penetration average was recorded and a N -value derived. This N -value
is an empirical relationship we have established to equate the dynamic cone data to the more
