4570 Greenleaf Dr E - Proposed addition 2010-04-20April, 20, 2010

Re: Proposed addition at 4570 Greenleaf Drive E.
I have been asked by the Planning Commission to revise the drawing of the
proposed addition to my home at the above address. I have complied with your
request and had the architect redraw the plans, moving the stairway to the
existing garage. Upon reviewing the revised drawings, I have determined that the
proposed change will add ten to fifteen thousand dollars to the cost of the
project. In addition, the change creates a less visually appealing exterior facade.
The additional costs include:

• Removal of the existing 18' garage door and reframe and install a 16'
garage door. Under the original plan, the existing garage remained
unchanged.
• The existing back entry and laundry room of my home will have to be
reconfigured with the proposed change. As this is fully finished area
of my home, the costs to reframe and refinish this area would be
considerable. Again, under the original plan, this area of my home
remained unchanged.
• The change you are proposing will require additional footings under
the cantilever, to support the stairway and the load above.
You have also suggested removing the stairway from the plan altogether. I do not
feel this is an option. As we have discussed, my elderly mother will be staying in
the room created by the addition. I feel that as a safety concern, I need to be able

to have another access to that room. In the event of a fire, locating and getting to
the existing stairway from the proposed bedroom would be difficult at best and
perhaps impossible. In addition, as my mother ages, it may be necessary to install
a lift car on the stairway. This would not be possible on the existing stairway due
to the 90 degree turn.
It is for these reasons that I do not want to relocate or remove the stairway from
the proposed addition. I believe that the plan as originally drawn puts the
stairway in the most cost effective and practical location. In addition, if you
review the drawing with your proposed changes, you will see that the curb appeal
has been greatly compromised. I am trying to be a good neighbor and I do not
want to build something that is not visually appealing.
In order to address your concerns that this addition will make my home a multi-
family dwelling, I am willing to remove the full kitchen and instead make the area
a wet bar, with a small refrigerator, microwave and sink. I believe that will give
my mother the independence she desires; to be able to microwave a frozen meal,
or to keep juice and milk cold so she can have cereal in the morning, without
coming down to the kitchen.
I appreciate you careful consideration in this matter. I look forward to your
thoughts and comments, but hope you see that it is my intent to build an addition
to meet the needs of my family in a practical, cost efficient manner and I trust we
can reach a solution that will satisfy all concerns.
Respectfully submitted,
Michael J. Rask

Michael Rask is here, following up with his mother -in -law apartment plans.
I told him that the three of you met yesterday and not only feel comfortable approving the revised plans, since he had
integrated the stairway into the existing home, but that he could have the second kitchen versus the wet bar.
Well, even though he showed and agreed that the plans are doable, he doesn't want to spend the extra money for the
2 "d staircase, so he is going to forego the 2 staircase, period. He did reference the comment he made from last week's
meeting w /Mike and I, that "whatever happens after the building permit is finalized, happens ".
Mr. Rask is working with Terry on what Terry will need for revised plans.
Thank you for your assistance with this one.
