Re: Holmsten Residence Remodeling — 6x6 Post Support
Memo: As requested, I have reviewed the support of the 6x6 post
on the basement concrete floor slab. It is my understanding
that the maximum design load is approximately 3600 lbs. Due
to the difficulty of constructing a concrete footing at
this location, it is my understanding that the 6x6 wood post
is supported on three treated 2x12's laid flat on the
concrete floor to distribute the load.
I have reviewed the built —up wood base detail and according
to my calculations, this would provide adequate support for
the load— bearing post and would not result in any signficant
stress in the concrete slab and the net soil bearing
pressure would be less than 2000 psf which is acceptable
for most normal soil conditions. To be conservative, I have
assumed 2500 psi concrete and a 3" basement floor slab.
SUMMARY OF STRESSES: (BASED ON SERVICE LOADS)
EFFECTIVE CONCRETE BEARING STRESS: 17.8 PSI
(ALLOWABLE BEARING STRESS: 1300 PSI)
CONCRETE PUNCHING SHEAR STRESS: 16.6 PSI
(ALLOWABLE SHEAR STRESS: 63 PSI)
EFFECTIVE 2X12 BENDING STRESS: 850 PSI
(ALLOWABLE BENDING STRESS #2: 975 PSI)
MAXIMUM SOIL BEARING: 1800 PSF
(ALLOWABLE SOIL BEARING: 2000 PSF)
I hereby certify that this plan, specification or
report was prepared by me or under my direct
supervision and that I am a duly registered
