Schroeder Construction 14680 91' Ave N Maple Grove, MN 55369 Attention: John Schroeder Subject: Existing Beam Review - 3873 Kennet Circle, Eagan, MN Project# 2010 -055 P,` ,,2,-; / T 95/17 To whom it may concern: At the request of J. Schroeder Construction, Craig Oswell, PE of Oswell Engineering and Consulting, L.L.C. performed a site visit on August 5, 2010 and a review of an existing LVL beam at the above residence. The existing beam is a triple 18" deep LVL which spans approximately 20' -6 ". It bears at the exterior in a frame wall over a full height masonry basement foundation wall and at the interior on a knee wall over the split level foundation wall adjacent the stairwell. The beam supports a roof truss span from the house rear of approximately 24' and from the front of approximately 8'. The beam currently has a mid - support, which the owner wishes to remove as part of a kitchen remodel. My review and calculations indicate the following: me. 1. The existing beam and its framing and foundation bearing locations are structurally adequate without the use of the interior mid - support. No additional footing or end support is required. 2. While the beam is adequate for deflection in its existing condition, the contractor wishes to further stiffen it to a total load deflection of less than 0.5 ". He proposes installing an additional 24" deep LVL lam to the beam. This is acceptable and will accomplish the desired deflection limit. The new lam is to be screwed to the existing beam with two rows of either 5" long TrussLoks or 1 /4" diameter by 6" long SDS screws at 24" on center. The new lam does not need to extend over the bearing of the existing beam and it can be stopped up to 24" short of each beam end as desired. It is my professional engineering opinion that the construction noted above will be structurally adequate for the proposed remodel. The observations and opinions expressed in this report are based on my professional engineering experience and judgment, as well as the visual inspection. All other items and non - structural design considerations are to be by others. All work is to be performed in accordance with the Code and standard industry practice. I hereby certify that this report was prepared by me and that I am a duly licensed engineer under the laws of the state of Minnesota. ),f you have any questions or require further assistance, please contact Craig Oswell, PE (MN Registration #42341) 8 -10 -10
