Soil classifications were also determined by observing the hand auger probe cuttings. The excavating contractor typically removed up to 7 feet of topsoil, fill and loose silts from the building area with dozers and scrapers. Soils encountered in the excavation bottoms primarily consisted of silty sand and poorly graded sand with silt which were judged to be in a medium dense condition. The building was excavated to an approximate elevation of 899 on the north end to 9001h on the south end. The proposed building finished floor elevation is 903.5. Based on the construction staking, the oversizing achieved by the contractor was in excess of 1H: IV (one horizontal:one vertical). Engineered Fill The engineered fill was typically placed in 8 to 12 inch thick lifts with scrapers and dozers and then compacted with a large, self-propelled, vibratory sheepsfoot roller. The engineered fill consisted mainly of silt and silty sand. A total of 16 compaction tests were performed in the engineered fill placed during the site wall backfill/utilities grading. All tests met or exceeded the minimum density requirement of 95 percent of standard Proctor density (ASTM D 698). The compaction test results and Proctor curves have been previously submitted and are attached to this report. Concrete Reinforcement Concrete reinforcement special inspection observations were conducted from July 12 to July 22, 1996, by an ICBO certified special inspector for reinforced concrete. Copies of the special inspector daily report (reports 1 through 7) are attached to this report. In summary, the observed reinforcing was placed in accordance with the available plans and specifications. Concrete Placement Braun Intertec did not observe the concrete placement procedures being used for this project. A representative of Taylor Ball performed the on-site concrete testing and prepared the compressive strength test cylinders. Concrete Testing Concrete compressive strength test cylinders were picked up from the site and delivered to the laboratory for curing and compression testing. The results of the compressive strength testing were previously submitted and are attached to this report. Review of the attached 28-day test results indicate the concrete represented by the cylinders has exceeded the required minimum compressive strengths. Conclusion Based on the results of our soil borings and excavation observation, it is our opinion that the excavation bottom soils are adequate for fill and foundation support. Based on the results of the compaction tests, it appears the fill has been placed adequately for foundation and floor slab support. Based on our concrete reinforcement observations and compressive strength tests, it appears the concrete reinforcement was placed in accordance with the project plans and specifications and the compressive strength results met or exceeded the minimum strength requirements. Our work was performed in general accordance with our cost estimate dated June 5, 1996. This report provides a summary of our services. Background Information Braun Intertec Corporation (Braun Intertec) performed a geotechnical evaluation for the project. The report is dated February 26, 1996, Project BODX-96-012. We were provided with a "Grading and Drainage Plan" prepared by Westwood Professional Services, Inc., dated April 21, 1996, last revised June 21, 1996. We were also provided with a "Foundation/Slab Plan" prepared by Brooks Borg Skiles Architecture Engineering dated June 5, 1996, last revised July 1, 1996. Parking lot and building corner stakes were set in the field by Westwood Professional Services, Inc. Typically, cut or fill to establish grade was indicated on the stakes. Braun Intertec excavation oversizing measurements, bottom of excavation elevations and compaction test locations and elevations were referenced from these stakes. The location of the graded building pad and parking lot is the responsibility of Westwood Professional Services, Inc. Proposed Construction The project consists of constructing a single story, slab-on-grade structure. The structure will utilize wood and metal framing. The building will be supported by conventional spread footings designed for a soil bearing pressure not exceeding 3,000 pounds per square foot (psf). The site work will also involve construction of a parking lot to the northeast of the building. Excavation Observations The excavation observations were conducted by a senior engineering assistant from June 27 to July 5, 1996. The excavation observations consisted of observing the soils exposed in the bottom and side walls of the excavations. The approximate density or consistency of the soils encountered was estimated by judging the force required to advance random, shallow (up to 3 feet
