The building inspector noted that the header framing deviated from the detail shown on page 5/6 of the city reviewed and approved plan. Rather than using individual headers for each window with 3 studs installed from bottom plate to top plate, your framer installed a long header that spanned all four windows with 4 studs installed from the bottom plate to the bottom of the header. As framed, the headers and studs support gravity loads without problems but it presents a problem for wind loads. Wind load (horizontal loading) is carried by the wall framing from wall bottom plate to top plate. As framed, the only studs that reach from bottom plate to top plate are at the ends of the window banks over 13 feet apart. The wind load that they have to carry is very large. Additionally, the wind load has to be carried to them by way of the out -of -plane (weak direction) bending of the 2 -ply 11 -7/8" LSL header. Rather than overtax the existing framing, the repair will restore sufficient bending capacity of the wall in a manner similar to the original detail. The location of the hinge point and the material around the joint lends itself to a mechanical strap repair. Attached you will find 2 pages of details that show 2 views of the same fix. Install 2x10 blocking (snugly) between the tops of the jack studs between windows and the bottom of the top plate over the LSL header (4 locations). Install with grain vertical. Nail blocking to LSL header with 12- 10d nails. Install one thickness (probably '/2") of OSB or plywood panel to "pack out" the header flush with the inside face of the jack studs. Nail panel to 2x10 with 8 -10d nails. Install 2 Simpson LSTA21 straps (or similar) at each stud location. Fill holes with 10d nails —half of the strap over the jack studs and half over the freshly installed 2x10 and packing.
