At your request, we have re- calculated the load capacity of our JUS28 joist hanger installed as follows. • The JUS28 hanger is fastened to the supporting member with six (6) #8x1 -5/8" Deckmate wood screws, three in each hanger flange. • The supported joist is fastened to the JUS28 hanger with four (4) #8x1 -5/8" Deckmate wood screws, two in each side of the joist. • The framing members are treated southern yellow pine material. • The joists support an exterior deck. The joist span is approximately 10 feet or less. The joist spacing is approximately 12 inches on center. Based on the installation listed above, the calculated load capacity of the JUS28 joist hanger is 470 pounds. This value is derived directly from the 2005 National Design Specification for Wood Construction using the tabulated value of 98 lbs per fastener (18Ga steel connected to Southern Pine) multiplied by a Wet Service Factor of 0.80 resulting in an allowable lateral load of 78 pounds per screw. From the joist span and spacing information you have supplied, the required load capacity is 300 pounds assuming a 40 psf live load and 20 psf dead load. Because of this, it is my opinion that the joist hanger, as installed as listed above, can support the anticipated loads. If you have any questions regarding this matter, please call. Let me know how we can proceed. - Ben Beery 612 - 867 -0745 Forwarded conversation Subject: Homeowner in Eagan, MN What we can offer is a letter stating what the calculated load capacity is of our hanger when installed with screws. All of our letters are project specific so we will need some into to process your request. A letter request form is attached. What is most important is listed below. The DeckMate box should list the size of the screw (e.g. #9 x 2- 1/2 "). From this and the wood species we can determine what the load capacity is. If you can supply us with the joist span and spacing, I can include this in the letter and calculate the end reaction of the joist using the residential loading specified in the building code. 1) Requestor's Name, Company Name and Address 2) Builder or Owner's Name 3) Jobsite Address, include lot or house number 4) What USP Product/Products were used 6) Identify supporting member (header /ledger) and supported member (joist). (Ex. 2 -2x12 Southern Pine header) 7) What nails or fasteners were used? (Size and Type) 16d — Size : Common Type 8) Are all nail holes filled (if not, why)? 8) If masonry; is the wall fully grouted and reinforced? 9) Any other information: Was hanger installed correctly? I have installed your Joist Hangers (Product # USP #JUS28 -TZ) purchased at Home Depot. I have installed them with Deckmate Brand Screws manufactured by Philips Fastner Products. My building code official has brought it to my attention that you require 10d Common or 16d Sinker Nails. I am wondering if the Deckmate Product is an acceptable alternative? If so, would it be possible to receive a letter of authorization from USP to use this fastener with your product?
