2.3 All steel framing members to which gypsum sheathing
will be screw attached shall be straight and truc, and shall be
spaced not grealer than 24 in. (610 mm) o.c. They shall be pro-
duced from steel of the design thickness required and shall be
pro[ected wi[h a protective coating to prevent corrosioa The
fastening surfac:c [o which gypsum sheathing will be attached
shall be not less [han 11/4 ia (32 mm) wide.
2.4 Gypsum sheathing used in building construction shall be
not less than 8 in. (203 mm) from the finish grade in fully
weather and water-protec[ed siding sys[ems, and not less than
12 in. (305 mm) from the ground for properly dreined and ven-
tila[ed cruwl spxccs. Where ground moisturc or humidiry are
extreme and/or con[inuous, the ground surface shall be covered
with a vapor barrier.
3. Definitions and Terms Relating to the Speci6cation
31 Gypsum Sheathing - a gypsum board, 2 ft(610 mm) or
4 fr(1220 mm) wide, wi[h a water-resistant or nontrea[ed gyp-
sum core and water repellent surfaces, defined in ASTM
Specification C 79.
3.1.1 Type X Gypsum Sheathing - a gypsum board as
described in 3.1 having special fire resistant properties as
defined in ASTM Specification C 79.
3.2 Edge - paper bound edge,as manufactured.
3.3 End - mill-wt or field-cut end perpendiculaz to edge. At
such cuts, the gypsum core is exposed.
3.4 Exterior Cladding - a permanent material or system that
impedes [he transmission of environmental elements to the
sheathing.
3.5 Framing Member- that portion of framing, furring, etc.,
to which gypsum sheathing is attached. Unless otherwise spec-
ified herein, the surface to which abutting edges or ends are
attached shall be not less than 11h in. (38 mm) wide for wood
members and not less than 11/4 in. (32 mm) wide for s[ee] mem-
bers.
l. Scope
1.1 This specification describes the minimum requirements
for, 1nd the me[hods of handling, storage, xnd application of,
gypsum sheattting, a water-repellant panel shea[hiug, for use as
a subs[rate for extenor claddings.
1.1.1 Exterior claddings shall be provided [o protec[ gyp-
sum shea[hing from long-term weather exposure. (See section
61 for short-[erm exposure.)
1.1.2 Ex[erior claddings and [heir application me[hods
shal] be the responsibility of [hose making the recommenda[ion.
Consult the local building code or cladding manufac[urer to
determine when a weather-resis[ive barrier is rcquired.
1.2 Where fire resis[ance is reyuired for a sys[em employing
gypsum sheathing, detailn of construc[ion shall be in compli-
ance wi[h reports of tes[s of systems [ested in accordance wi[h
ASTM E 119 procedures by recognized [esting laboratories and
shall meet [he requirements of the fire rating specified (see Fire
Resistance Design Manuul, GA-600).
13 Where a sound con[rol requirement is specified for a sys-
[em employing gypsum sheathing, de[ails of construction shall
be in compliance with reports of tests of systems tested in
accordance with ASTM E 90 or E 336 that mee[ the require-
men[s of the sound control reting specified (see Fire Resistance
Design Manual, GA-600).
1.4 Where a racking resistance or wall sheaz requuement is
specified for a system employing gypsum sheathing, details of
construction shall be in compliance with reports of tests of sys-
tems tested in accordance with ASTM E 72 that meet the
requirements of the racking or sheaz value specified by the
designer or applicable building code.
2. General Provisions
2.1 Gypsum sheathing shall not be used on ceilings, soffits or
sills unless otherwise recommended by the manufacwrer.
2.2 All wood framing members to which gypsum shea[hing
will be fastened shall be straight and true. S[ud spacing shall be
not greater than 24 in. (610 mm) o.a The fastening surface shall
be no[ less than 1112 in. (38 mm) wide and shall not vary more

sum sheathing edges aze at righ[ angles to the framing members
to which it is attached.

sheathing edges aze parallel io the framing members to which it
is attached.
3.9 Shear Wall - a wall designed and cons[ruc[ed [o resis[
lateral wind or seismic loxds.
3.10 Weather-Resistive Barrier - a temporarily exposed
protective membrane, such as building felt or building paper,
that is intended [o impede the penetration of environmental ele-
ments untd the installation of a permanent exterior cladding.
4. Materials
4.1 Gypsum Sheathing - S[andard Specification for
Gypsum Sheathing Board, ASTM C 79.
4.2 Fasteners - Shall be as described in 42.1 thru 4.2.4.
Fastener length shall be not less than [ha[ specified in Table 1.
4.2.1 Nails - Shall be no[ Icss than 12 gage, galvanized,
with 7/1e in. (11 mm) dixmeter head.
4.2.2 Staples - Shall be gxlvanized steel, not less than 16
gage, 7/hfi in. (( l mm) crown, with divergent points.
4.2.3 Screws - Standard Specification fbr S[eel Drill
Screws for Application of Gypsum Board, ASTM C 1002.
4.2.3.1 Type W screws are designed for a[tachment to
wood framing.
4.2.3.2 Type S screws are designed for attachment to
light gage steel framing or wood framing.
4.2.4 Screws - Steel Drill Screws for the Applicntion of
Gypsum Board or Metal Plaster Bases to Steel Studs from
0.033 ia (0.84 mm) to 0.112 in. (2.54 mm) in Thickness,
ASTM C 954.

4.3 Framing Members
4.3.1 Wood framing members shall conform [o Americxn
Lumber Standxrds Specification.
4.3.2 Steel framing members shall conform to ASTM C
645 (light gage) or ASTM C 955 (not less Ihan 0.033 in. thick).
4.4 Exterior Cladding(s) - Sidings such as, but not limi[ed
to, wood, aluminum, vinyl, plywood, brick, slucco, or exterior
insulation and finish systems.
4.5 Weather-Resistive Barrier - Shall be as described in
4.5.1 thru 4.5.2.

4.5.2 Building Paper - Type D paper conforming to
Federal Specification for Baiilding Paper, Vegetable Fiber
(Kraft, Waterproofed, Wuter Repellant and Fire Resistant),
Federal Specification UU-B-790a, Interim Amendment 1.
5. Delivery, Iden[ification, Handling, and Storage
5.1 All mxterials shall be delivcred in original packages, con-
tainers or bundles bexring brand name, applicable standard des-
ignation, and name of manufac[urer or supplier for whom prod-
uct is manufacmred.
5.2 All malerials shall be kept dry, preferably by being stored
inside a building - under roof. Where necessary [o store gyp-
sum sheathing outside, it shall be s[acked above ground, prop-
erly supported on a level platform and fully protec[ed from
weather exposure.
5.3 Gypsum sheathing shall be neatly s[acked fla[ wilh care
taken [o preven[ sagging or damage lo edges, ends and surfaces.
6. Application of Gypsum Shea[hing
6.1 Exposure Afrer Installation - Gypsum sheathing is a
substrnte [ha[ is not in[ended for long-term exposure. While
local weather eonditions will dic[ate the length of time gypsum
sheathing may be permitted to be exposed, it should perform
satisfactorily if exposed ro the elements for up to one month.
The gypsum shea[hing shall be covered immediately with a
wea[hervresistive barrier if exposure time will be extended or
weather conditions will be severe.
6.2 Methods of Cu[ting and Insfallation - Gypsum sheath-
ing shall be cut by scoring and breaking or by sawing, working
from the face paper eide. When scoring, a shxrp Lmife shall be
used to cut through the face paper into the gypsum core. The
gypsum shea[hing is then snapped back away from the wt face.
The back paper shall be permiUed to be broken by snapping the
gypsum sheathing in the reverse direc[ion, or preferably by w[-
[ing the back paper. All w[ edges and ends of gypsum sheath-
ing shall be trimmed [o obtain nea[ fit[ing joints when gypsum
sheathing is installed. Holes for pipes, fix[ures or other small
openings shall be scored on the face and back before removal
of the cut-out with a saw or special tool designed for [his use.
Where gypsum shea[hing meets projecting surfaces, the gyp-
sum shea[hing shall be neafly scribed and w[.
6.3 When a weather-resistive barrier is required, the weath-
er-resistive barrier shall be attached over the face of the gypsum
shettthing, to the framing, with the upper layer lapped over the
lower layer in accordance with the code.
6.4 Gypsum sheathing shall be propedy flashed at openings
and preferably located so lhxt no joint will align wi[h xn edge
of the openirtg. Joints shall be s[aggered.
6.41 Holes and cutouts for pipes or fixtures, or other
smxll openings shall be properly protec[ed by means such as
flashing or caulking.
6.5 Macimum spacing of framing members shall be 24 in.
(610 mm) o.c.
6.6 Control joints shall be instxlled in walls wherever speci-
fied.
6.7 Where sheaz values xre not required, gypsum sheathing 4
ft(1220 mm) wide shall be permitted to be applied pazallel or
perpendicular to framing with vertical joints over framing
members and with gypsum sheathing fitted snugly around all
window and dooe openings.

6.8 Syuare edge gypsum sheathing applied perpendicular to
framing shxll be covered with building felt or equivalen[, or

6.9 Tongue & Groove (V-edge) gypsum shea[hing shall be
applied perpendicular ro framing members, with grooved edges
down, intedocking the [ongue of the panel below without forc-
ing. Ends of panels shall abu[ over centers of framing members
and all end joints shall be staggered between adjacent wurses.
Gypsum sheathing shall be Fitted snugly azound all window and
door openings.
610 When shear values aze nol reyuired, fasteners shall be
spaced not more than 8 in. (203 mm) o.c. along vertical ends or
edges and interrnedia[e supports. When wall bracing or wall
sheaz values are being assigned to the installed gypsum sheath-
ing, the fas[ener spacing shall be as speciFied by the gypsum
sheathing manufac[urer or as set forth in the Appendix.
610.1 Fasteuers shall be spaced not less than 3/8 in. (]0
mm) from the ends and edges of the gypsum sheathing.
610.2 Nails shall be driven so tha[ the heads are at or
slightly below the surface of the gypsum sheathing. Care shall
be taken to avoid damage to the face and core, such as breaking
the paper or fracturing the core.
6.10.3 Screws shall be driven so Ihat the screw heads are
at or slightly below the gypsum sheathing surFace paper without
breaking the surface paper or stripping the framing member
azound the screw shank.
6.10.4 Staples shall be driven with the crown parallel to
framing members and in such a manner that the crown bears
tightly agains[ the gypsum sheathing but dces no[ w[ into the
face paper.

This list of items may be helpful for Plan Reviewers and Building Inspectars
use as a guide for anfarcing r.he Minnesota Energy Code. The items apply to
Group R. Division 3 Occupancies, one- and two-family residential dwellings.
The items marked with * apply only to detached one- and two-farnily
residential dwellings. ,
PLAN REVIEW ISSUES
FOUNDATION INSULATION
- foundation wall insulation R-5 minimum
- foundation insulation extends from top of wall down to top of the footing
- exterior foundation insulation is covered by a protective coating finish
CONCRETE SLAB OR UNDER-SLAB INSULATION
- slab on grade perimeter insulation R-5 minimum
- slab insulation extends from top of slab to design frost line or top of
footing
- flours over unheated space R-30 minimum
WINDOWS / DOORS / SKYLIGHTS
- average U-value is 0.37 maximum for windows and glass doors (excludes
foundation windows)

- gaps between framing less than one-half inch are eliminated by securing
framing together or are insulated at the time of assembly
- all penetrations between conditioned and unconditioned spaces made
prior to framing inspaction are sealed
INTERIOR AIR BARRIER
- all fire stops are air sealed
- pipes, ducts, wires, equipment and flues and chimneys through the interic
air barrier are sealad
- a sealed continuous interior air barrier is installed on the warm side oi
the building envelope at ceilings, walls, and floor rim joist areas?
- air barrier behind tub and shower is s-ealed and protected
- recessed light fixtures are sealed
ENVELOPE INSULATION
- basement insulation R-5 minimum
- wind wash barrier on wall separating house and garage is sealed
- loose fill insulation is prevented from entering the eaves

on the unconditioned side
